Yeah, from everything I've read, indications are that this guy is a complete egotistical dick. That being said, he is one helluva filmmaker. I have to put "the Abyss" among my favorite films and its absence from my collection seems ridiculous considering Blu-ray has just celebrated its 10th Anniversary. C'mon James don't treat us like an ex-wife.

I remember when True Lies came out in non-anamorphic video, a 5-star release was supposed to come out within the year.

I remember seeing it many many summers ago at The Cine Capri, Phoenix's once grand 800 seat movie house which was torn down to make way for a parking lot and office building. That is where I lined up with other teens to see some of the greatest films released in the mid 1970s and as a young adult in the 1980s. If memory serves, "The Abyss" opened in the late summer and it didn't receive nearly enough marketing push. It was released with a whimper and gained most of its following via home video. But I left the theater with the same feeling of awe that "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and E.T. The Extraterrestrial inspired. It really deserves a top-notch release.

Addition:
The Abyss was a box office disappointment, released on August 9, 1989, in 1,533 theaters, where it grossed $9,319,797 on its opening weekend ranking #2 at the box office. It went on to make $54,461,047 in North America and $35,539,051 throughout the rest of the world for a worldwide total of $90,000,098, above its estimated $70 million production budget
It also didn't help that it was the third underwater thriller/adventure released in just a few months in 1989 after Deep Star Six and Leviathan. I'm guessing audiences had deep sea diving burnout by the time The Abyss was finally released.

It's always been my favorite of Cameron's films as well. I've been eagerly anticipating a quality Blu-Ray release for years and I'll be first in line when it actually is released. I just hope I'm able to sneak out of my nursing home to buy it on release day.

I love it in Colorado...I'll come bust you out...that is, as long as I don't break a hip in the process!

Re: The Abyss on Blu-ray ever?

Well, now the $64 million question is: Will the theatrical color-timing be respected, kept intact, or will THE ABYSS receive the patented Cameronism of tealification and 'modernization'?

It is also my favorite Cameron film, although ALL his early efforts were simply spectacular, so it's a VERY close race... BUT, if theatrical color timing isn't respected, I'll pass. Why mess with perfection. Twice burned (TERMINATOR, ALIENS Bluray SEs), third time shy...

As I've said before, we may have to wait until Cameron kicks the bucket in order for the original theatrical presentations of these films can be done justice in HD...

I don't care. As long as we get something I'll be happy.

Re: The Abyss on Blu-ray ever?

The Abyss (Extended Version) is such an underrated movie, as I can't wait to see an HD Anamorphic BluRay version hopefully next year.

You just don't see many Directors like him anymore as he seems to be the last of the dying breed from that era of the 70's/80's directors (Spielberg, Coppola, Scorcese, Lucas, Depalma). Most new directors today have to latch onto some older franchise or comic book character for them to make a great movie.

And he's responsible for changing the color timing on the Blu-ray. He'll probably fidgit around with The Abyss as well.

I just hope we get the theatrical release...I was never a fan of the extended edition (I know I'm probably in the minority). I mean, I don't MIND if we get the extended edition...I just hope both are included. Then again, if we can get an untampered with version of the original, Cameron can mess up the extended version as much as he wants.

The theatrical cut is perfectly fine for the most part. Its biggest problem, which the extended version improves, is the ending. The aliens' motivations don't make much sense in the theatrical cut. It makes whole lot more sense in the extended cut.

Congrats, now that you said this, guarantee the theatrical re-release will be extended only, with a glorious teal look to it.

I liked the ambiguity of the original.

The only ending I remember is the aliens showing Ed Harris the way humans harm each other. I believe thats the extended version ending. How does the theatrical end?

Re: The Abyss on Blu-ray ever?

The aliens just show him the messages he was sending up to the crew as he went down. The messages saying stuff like "Love you wife", is what we're led to believe why they saved him. But all of the other stuff in the extended version where they show him mankinds ongoing destruction was axed.

Like Trespoochies said. The theatrical version makes it look like the aliens saved Bud cause they were doing him a solid for deactivating the bomb. The extended makes it clear that the aliens were about to destroy humanity because of all the senseless killing humans have done to each other over the years through war. They choose not to destroy humanity because of the selfless act by Bud and realize there is good in humanity.

Re: The Abyss on Blu-ray ever?

Ummmm...its been years since I watched "The Abyss" but the extended edition is so hackneyed that I find the theatrical cut far superior. I prefer the intellectual curiosity and pure benevolence of the sea dwellers in a happenstance encounter with human beings. In my opinion, that idea serves as a better allegorical lesson of how man should treat man. Otherwise the sea dwellers' actions are no better than that of mankind by threatening us with violent extinction. The extended version simply turns it into yet another film preaching similar themes as "The Day the Earth Stood Still." I prefer the gentle approach of "wonder and awe" in the original cut over the same shovel full of bullshit we've had to endure in countless films and television shows for decades.

Re: True Lies & The Abyss Blus in 2014, plus The X-Files & Twin Peaks

Well, I don't know the status of a True Lies Bluray, but I finally saw it in HD! It's streaming right now on Starz subscription service.

2014 can't come soon enough!

Starz or Encore was playing The Abyss in HD a year or so ago as well. Don't remember if it was the director's cut or not but it looked wonderful!

Theatrical cut, I DVR'd it and kept it. I think Sci-Fi or some cable channel played the directors cut a long time ago, but it was 4x3.

Recording True Lies tonight but I would rather wait for blu release. Are we pretty sure that's never gonna happen? How come these two can't go VoD?
