Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

Supposedly Kevin Smith slammed the Clerks blu-ray , as the movie was meant to look like crap.

Anyone know exactly what he said?

Re: Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

BTW I agree with what he supposedly said , I will never buy Clerks on blu-ray, Clerks X is all I need.

He said he thought it should be the last of his movies to come to blu-ray, since it would benefit the least from it

Did he slam the BD? I don't listen to his podcast.

He said "Fuck DVD! This is the way to watch my films." :)

Re: Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

From Blu-ray.com's review:

Who better to address the inherent problem with a Clerks Blu-ray release than Kevin Smith? After calling it a "vulgar cash grab" in one of the disc's lone exclusives, Smith offers this gem: "When I was told they were doing a Clerks Blu-ray, of course, like most of you, I was like, why? Why would you do that? It spits in the face of the medium. The medium is all about the best presentation, amazing color, superior sound. Clerks is the antithesis of that. If Blu-ray is Superman, Clerks is its Lex Luthor. And not the new-school Lex Luthor; the old-school, like Superboy balded him... and he's like I hate you for life motherf@#%er! That's what that is. So the idea of putting Clerks on Blu-ray, to me, it seemed repugnant, but it was gonna happen anyway cause that's business. They gotta keep ringing pennies out of this little black and white movie."

Kevin Smith sounds like a douchebag, I'm glad I don't like any of his movies.

*buys more B&W movies on Blu-Ray*

Re: Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

The film was shot on cheap 16mm stock, but I guess Smith doesn't realize that 16mm film is still of a higher "resolution" than Blu-ray. Black Dynamite looks fucking gorgeous on BD for a film shot on (reverse) 16mm.

Yes, the BD is a lot superior to the DVD. The grain is all their in it's glory. Thank God it wasn't DNR-ed to death.

I simply bought it because I love Kevin Smith's (early) films and I wanted the J&SBSB documentary.

He wasn't making a swipe regarding B&W films on Blu-Ray -- he was making a swipe at the non-existent benefit of putting Clerk on Blu-Ray when it was shot on a handicam for $26,000 in 1994 dollars. It's nice to see someone who calls out a money grab when it occurs.

The Clerks blu-ray is on sale at Amazon for $16.99, which is $9 less than the Clerks X DVD.

So it ain't all bad.

I never purchased Clerks X and got rid of my old non-anamorphic DVD 6 or so years ago... so to get it at Best Buy today for $15 was worth it to get the movie again (in it's best presentation) with a TON of bonus materials. It works for me.

Hold the phone, is this the long fabled "missing" documentary I've heard about for so many years? I've got Clerks X and my current Blu-Ray guideline is only new titles (which includes catalog DVDs I never bought on DVD) or upgrades from non-16x9 DVDs, but if it's that docu I might need to pick up Clerks on Blu.

It is a 90 minutes or so documentary about Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and it is pretty entertaining.

It's the same line of thinking: "Oh this movie's too old to be on Blu-Ray, this movie's too low-budget, this movie doesn't have a lot of CGI, this movie's not in color." Too many people already think that Blu-Ray is only for "event" movies without Kevin Smith's help.

Yeah his comment is asinine. His wording makes it like Blu-ray is just a gimmick for top A/V quality, completely missing the fact that someday Blu-ray might completely replace DVD.

He always has something to bitch about... and the majority of his bitching seem to appear around the same time he has a movie coming out.

Re: Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

Yeah, to me, the point of the format is to reveal the source material, such as it is, more accurately. Movies that look great on BD don't look great because of the format. They already looked great, and the format just lets us see that.

Re: Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

Yeah. Well, this is the same Kevin Smith who says "Fuck DVD" at the beginning of the commentary for the Chasing Amy Criterion commentary. The commentary was originally from the laserdisc release which was released just as DVD was being introduced to the market.

Unfortunately, while I like some of the movies he makes, I feel that he still has a lot of growing up to do. He always makes statements that he later has to explain or brush off. He even said that the Southwest Airlines rant was a "heat of the moment' thing and he used Twitter to rant.

Re: Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

Jesus, he was making a joke, not actually complaining. The point of the extra in which he makes the statement, which the quote in this thread doesn't include, is that he is introducing the Jay and Silent Bob doc. He explains that he wanted to include something extra for those who already own/ed the movie on DVD and have now purchased the Blu-Ray, which is why the Jay and Bob doc is on the Clerks Blu-Ray and not the J&SBSB disc.

In any case, if you only tangentially followed the Southwest Airlines debacle, it is essential, in my opinion, that people read this piece before making any judgment calls: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lee-st..._b_470024.html

Glad to learn that Clerks is only $15 this week, though. What about Chasing Amy? I desperately want it, but I generally avoid paying $30 for a Blu if I can avoid it.

I want Chasing Amy as well but so far it's "no go" on a $15 price point. I would imagine it's only a matter of time though... it can't be that long until it drops as well to this price. I was waiting for these to hit $15 each before buying them and now I'm one down with one more to go.

Same here. As I was saying in one of the Bargain BD Threads, I really just want the Chasing Amy BD for all of the new extras, since the P/Q is questionable.

Does the Chasing Amy Blu-Ray still have the "Fuck DVD" comment on it?

I have Clerks on laserdisc, manufactured by Technidisc which was the absolute best laserdisc manufacturer in the world (not).

Re: Does anyone know what Kevin Smith said about Clerks on blu-ray?

I bought the Kevin Smith box set (Clerks, Chasing Amy and JASBSB) for $38.99 (Amazon lightning deal).

And yeah, that's a pretty ignorant comment to make. The medium is not about "amazing quality and superior sound." It's about bringing the theatrical presentation into your home. Even if they are black-and-white, low-budget, dialogue-based movies, a good Blu-ray edition can only be an improvement.

And if he's so keen on having pictures with amazing picture quality, he should start by learning some cinematography himself.

He also said that Magnolia was a "cinematic root canal." But at least P.T. Anderson knows which lens does what.

No, because the Blu-Ray doesn't even contain that commentary (none of the actual Criterion extras are on the BD). The comment is intact on the DVD, and there's an introduction where Kevin jokes about it.

With Mirimax being sold, I wonder if the BD and DVD prices will drop so Disney can gain additional revenue before it's all turned over to the new owner? Or is that how it even works?
