No, it was an extended version of the director's cut. The ultimate cut was 215 minutes long whereas the director's cut was 186 minutes long. And the only feature you lost was the Maximum Movie Mode which was mostly an over-glorified PiP mode.

They may do it like LOTR, making the majority of extras promotional in nature on the first release, while doing in-depth features for the later release.

Not yet (at least none that has been made publicly available) but soon. Last I read the PS3 is getting two updates. The first is for games (which Sony claims most are already compatible but I'm sure each game will require a minor update of their own to assign a second "camera") and later down the road it'll get an update for 3D movies.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
I wonder if Avatar might be that rare movie that continues to play on a small number of screens even after the DVD/BD release. Seeing it at home in on a TV in 2D will not be the same as 3D on the big screen and there might be enough fans to keep some theatrical showings going. With a Box Office take of $2.389 billion, this movie isn't exactly typical.

Any chance we might get some of Cameron's other works on Blu-Ray, since Avatar is a bona-fide hit? I remember him saying that once he finished Avatar he was going to work on remasters of The Abyss and True Lies.

Well, we know Aliens is coming. Apparently, The Abyss has had an HD transfer done and it's just waiting for his approval.

I really hope True Lies makes its BD debut this year. The Abyss has been mentioned as a likely title this year.

Man, I bought the nonanamorphic DVD less than a year ago cuz I just coudn't take not having this. EVEN in it's non anamorphic state the film soooo much fun. Awesome humor and action. To me that was the last good Arnold flick.

My suspicion, though, is that the 2-D release will be 2.35:1, and the 3-D, whenever it happens, will be 1.78:1. Information I've seen suggests that those would be Cameron's preferences.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Well, here are IMDB's reported aspect ratios:
1.78 : 1 (IMAX 3-D version) (2K 3-D version: constant image width venues)
2.35 : 1 (2-D version) (2K 3-D version: constant image height venues)
It seems that the film was just presented with the largest image a given screen could handle. Many traditional 2D theaters have 2.35:1 screens, so a movie in that ratio takes up more real estate than it would at 1.78:1. If that's the reasoning, he would probably prefer 1.78:1 for home video, although he may also want to do a 2.35:1 version for CIH setups.
Otherwise, I don't understand why one ratio would be preferred for 2D and another for 3D.

Only the 3-D version is being distributed in alternate ratios. In this case, Cameron says that he prefers 1.85:1 for 3-D because the extra height is more immersive. But, theatrically, auditoriums are instructed to project whichever one will be larger on their screens.
I expect the eventual 3-D Blu-ray to be 16:9.

Also, in this instance with this movie, 2:35 would be cropped, losing information in the top and bottom of the image. It's like having a widescreen transfer of a 1:33 movie. Since every widescreen TV is 1:78, why would he crop and make the image smaller?

Then why is the DVD screener 1:78?
