First Blu-ray upgrade?

I have just recently upgraded to Blu-ray. After I got my player I made a small list of movies that I already own on DVD that I would like to own on Blu-ray. Luckily the list is very small. Today I bought the first movie that was on my list. I’m curious to know what movie you guys upgraded to Blu-ray first? Also what other movies are you wanting to upgrade to Blu-ray?

My first upgrade is Superman Returns. I’ve only been buying new releases on Blu-ray but this week Superman Returns went on sale for $16.99 at Best Buy so I went for it.

This is the list of other movies I want to upgrade to Blu-ray:

Twister
Transformers
Kill Bill 1 & 2
Twilight
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
The Simpsons Movie
The Nightmare before Christmas
Snow White
Sleeping Beauty
Pinocchio

I’d also like your guy’s opinion on whether or not they are worth the upgrade.

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

"Transformers" and "The Simpsons Movie" are just plain unbelievable on blu-ray - there is a reason that Best Buy used both of them to demo the technology.

"Twilight" is not a substantial improvement, but it does let the black pop out more heavily.

"Twister" is complicated in my eyes. While the transfer is better than the DVD from about a decade ago, it is still a little grainy and rough around the edges.

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

Haven't found a good price ($5.00 or less) on anything yet that I want to upgrade. But there are very few titles out of my collection that I'll want to upgrade. Probably just my top 20 or so favorites. But who knows, as time goes on and the pawn shops start selling used blu-rays for $3.00 I might start upgrading more. And of course just like I do now with DVDs, if I comes across a special edition release of title that has a tone of cool features on it that I feel is worth spending $5.00 on again to replace the bare bones release I already own then I'll upgrade. Anywho... As for my feelings on what you bought above being worth it or not? That's all up to you. They are all great titles. But it all depends on how much you like blu-ray and the titles. And of course how much you are willing to spend on a title. I personally feel that no one should ever spend more than $5.00 on a title. I have a collection of 3822 titles and I've spent no more than $5.00 on each (though most were less). I only own 5 blu-ray titles, three were $5.00, one was $1.99, and the other (a season) was $6.00.

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

I'm not planning on upgrading any titles I already own on DVD to Blu-ray. I will use Blu-ray as merely a continuation of my collection, by only picking up new releases. My first Blu-ray was The Hangover (which I found cheaper than the DVD counterpart).

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

I bought Blade Runner on LD. Then, I bought an LD player.

I bought Blade Runner on DVD. Then, I bought a DVD player.

I bought Blade Runner on HD DVD. Then, I bought an HD DVD player.

I bought Blade Runner on Blu-ray. Then, I bought a Blu-ray player.

I may not have a lot, but I have priorities. ;)

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

I didn't worry about the timing of which to do first. Just go by whatever deals you can find.

But, going by that list, which version of The Nightmare Before Christmas do you have? If it's the old one, I'd definitely upgrade that since it's an old non-anamorphic transfer.

Does anyone know the current availability period for Disney Platinum/Diamond releases? I think it was two years, but I don't know if that's changed. Sleeping Beauty would go OOP this fall if it's still two years.

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

Well I'd suggest getting Sleeping Beauty pretty quickly, Disney is putting it back "in the vault" at the end of the month.

I own the 2-Disc Collectors Edition.

It sucks I feel like I just got it on DVD. I really wish I got a Blu-ray player sooner. lol

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

Kill Bill 1 & 2 are huge upgrades over the DVD counterparts. Twister is decent PQ upgrade and a nice bump in the audio with TrueHD (which is the main draw of the movie). The others, I don't have both formats to compare.

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

Go with the import from England of Twister. It's region free, has better picture and sound mix. My listening expierience with it is that the low end is better.

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

I upgraded a few to BD mostly when the price was too good to pass up. Right now the only current DVD's I plan on upgrading are the titles listed in my sig as those become available. When I first got in to Blu-ray (and HD DVD) I was working downstate and had a separate apartment down there. So I didn't see it so much as an upgrade as having another superior copy where I lived 3 days a week.

So far I've upgraded 49 titles from DVD to Blu-ray and the vast majority were well worth it.

Wait....what else is going in the vault? You're scaring me, lol. What should I get now from Disney before I have to wait many years again?

Re: First Blu-ray upgrade?

Monsters Inc for me and that was mainly because I couldn't pass up the deals for MI/Up a couple months ago. Also did Cars recently for the BB steelbook.

Sleeping Beauty is the only Blu, but the DVDs going back in besides SB are:
The Jungle Book Platinum Edition
Jungle Book 2
101 and 102 Dalmatians, the live action versions
101 Dalmatians II: Patch’s London Adventure

They all go back "into the vault" January 29, so I'd pick SB up ASAP if I were you.

You better check which version of Superman Returns you purchased. There are two different versions floating around, one with a glorious PCM soundtrack and an older version with lossy Dolby Digital only.

The movies I left in the quote above are the ones I would upgrade at first from your list, and which show the most improvement over dvd. If you want to check out the very best upgrades on Blu-ray for picture quality, use the following list as a guide and starting point. These are the cream of the crop:

That sleeping bitch is mine now. Thanks. Could care less about the others.

Black Friday '09, I bought The Dark Knight at Target, and then later bought The Departed and Wedding Crashers at Walmart. By the end of that day, our Blu-ray library went from two titles to five, and three of them were upgrades.

I decided to go Blu when I saw that The Neverending Story is coming out next March!

I bought Speed Racer and Sleeping Beauty to start.

I "only" have a 32" HD set, is The Simpsons Movie worth upgrading? :)
