Cast Away Blu-ray good or bad?
Need some help. I tried a search on Cast Away but it won't search with both terms for some reason, so sorry if this has been gone through.
Anyway, is this a decent Blu or not? The review here raves about it but on Amazon they say it's a crappy Blu and to keep your standard DVD version because it's a better picture. Who is right? |

The links below are all positive reviews. I have the disc and am very satisfied w/ the PQ. I would recommend keeping the dvd version if you care about special features though, its a pretty bare bones disc

For future use, Cinema Squid is the one stop location for BD reviews as Drav3n detailed.
The "worst" review states For the most part, the video quality of this Blu-ray transfer is excellent. The original 2-disc DVD edition was regarded as one of the best film transfers at the time of its release. And, I can't believe I am saying this, but the original DVD (with a proper video upscaler) can actually look better at times than the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray transfer shines during the deserted island sequences. However, it lacks depth and cleanliness during the stateside sequences. The opening and closing scenes of the film are loaded with film grain, scratches, and other dust and dirt. Some vertical banding can even be seen in the blue sky. Needless to say, it made me very nervous when I first starting watching the film. But, when Chuck gets stranded on the island, the image is crispy clean and very lush and detailed. The depth to the colors is outstanding. My only criticism of the island sequences would have to be that the crystal blue water and waves at times appear a little pixilated. This is a very common occurrence on Blu-ray in water sequences. While, die-hard lovers of the film may choose to stick with the original DVD, the middle section of the film should not be missed on Blu-ray, as it is represented in full 1080p glory. |

Re: Cast Away Blu-ray good or bad?
Thanks for the replies. I have a sneaking feeling that down the road there will be another Cast Away Blu release so thinking maybe i'll hold on to mine. If the studios were truly onboard with Blu this wouldn't have happened. It shouldn't be a hard choice. I've watched all the features and though better than average, I'm not one to watch more than once but still just knowing the tranfer on Blu has some weak spots. Think I'll wait.
