It's the exact same transfer as the Optimum release, which is godawful.

I can vouch for the awfulness of the Optimum release (RAN) picked it up based on good reviews and was sorely disappointed. I'm not that guy who's measuring pixels and sat numbers but I do know a good transfer when I see one and RAN looks like something a vampire wiped its ass with...twice.(thanks whistler)

That's a confusingly specific bit of color.

DVDAf has list prices of $39.95 for these. Is Lionsgate serious?

Yes.

Wherehouse.com has Ran for $35.18 and Contempt for $29.58. I saw these listed (I've got some credit with them) recently and did a "What the Hell" order, and they shipped to me Monday, got them today.

I'm going to open them up later/tomorrow (going downtown in a couple hours), but just looking at the backs of these I can say that "A.K." isn't listed on Ran.

Wait, what? They're already shipping these?

Yeah, I was surprised too. When I got the shipping notice, I figured I'd be returning the wrong discs. Nope, in hand and everything (A.K. is listed in the small print credits, after some more reading).

Interesting. Are they in the same packaging as the UK Blu-rays, or are they in standard cases?

Strange. Amazon has the pre-order for Ran as a Feb 10 release date ($26.99 pre-order price).

Yeah they did, damn it. I may just spring for that UK disc when the price drops a little, it is really pricey right now.

FWIW, it's locked to region-B.

Irritating for most, but not a deal breaker for me, I'm region free.

From Blu-ray.com --

According to the French media publication Ecran total, Studio Canal will release its third wave of Blu-ray titles in early 2010, which includes some acclaimed movies by major filmmakers: 'Mulholland Drive' (David Lynch, 2001), 'Peeping Tom' (Michael Powell, 1960), 'That Obscure Object of Desire' (Luis Buñuel, 1977), and 'Grand Illusion' (Jean Renoir, 1937).

Going from recent history with previous Studio Canal titles, most of these will be released in the UK by Optimum Home Entertainment around the same time, and possibly even in the US by Lionsgate a few months later.
I'm in for all of those, especially Peeping Tom. The Studio Canal releases so far have been a mixed bag, hopefully these will be satisfactory.

I'm excited about Mulholland Drive

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't have the Studio Canal HD-DVD have pitch issues?

Does anyone have any info on whether Criterion still has any rights to La Grande Illusion, as well?

Yes, it did. This is very obvious from Ann Miller's first line of dialogue near the beginning of the movie.

Since The Third Man is also among the announced Blu-rays from Studio Canal, I assume we'll see a stateside release sooner or later as well.

That's what I thought. Thanks Josh!

Hopefully it won't be an issue this time around.

Though...will be better than Criterion's OOP Blu. It'd a damn fine Blu too.

Here's a list of all of the Studio Canal titles licensed to Criterion, all potential future releases from Lionsgate. (And all potential OOP Criterions).
