Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc
I got this today and gave it a spin. The picture quality is excellent, and there are English subtitles. Note that all of the extras except for the picture gallery do not play on a U.S. model PS3 (they must be PAL). No problems playing back the movie itself, though.

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc
Perhaps I should have said many titles. It seems like when one wants to purchase a blu-ray released by Miramax (and Dimension Films...Weinstein's label within Miramax), they tend to be expensive.
Titles like Hero and Sling Blade come to mind.
Catalog titles should never be priced above $20, and I'm sure many on this board would say $15 at most.
The same could be said for many Buena Vista titles (i.e. Disney) like Sin City, Dan in Real Life, Gone Baby Gone, Signs, Sixth Sense...

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc
which is the way it should be. No dubbing on foreign films..it totally destroys most films. Though...they were awesome for the 70s HK flicks

I got my copies from Chaos on Friday the 27th. The BD is packed in an Amaray case that is the height of a regular Blu-ray case but the thickness of a standard DVD case; I've never seen one before.
The main menu and movie are in region-free high def. There is no "setup" menu, it defaults to DTS-HD MA and English subtitles on (but they can be turned off, if desired). Very convenient.
The opening copy protection screens (the "don't burn" one was rather nicely done) are in high def. Those are followed by three trailers in PAL that don't play correctly on a regular USA BD player**. While the main menu button doesn't work, the trailers can be skipped easily with the chapter skip button. The extras are also in PAL, as Ralph Jenkins mentioned above.
The movie is lovely in high def; I couldn't ask for a better presentation, although perhaps people with high-end systems will find flaws to criticize. Also, the subtitles are the correct ones and don't have the numerous mistakes that so annoyed me on the Miramax DVD release*. So, a big from me for this release. If one has a region-free Blu-ray Disc player it would be even better, but all I wanted was the movie in high def.
*some subtitle errors on the DVD:
**Edit: There are reports from Amazon users that the PAL extras on the Australian disc play normally on an LG390 and a "Pioneer" BD player. They do not play on my Panny BD80.

Re: Amélie on Blu-ray Disc
Anyone get their order from Westend Entertainment (via Amazon resellers)? I notice they now have copies for sale at $31. They e-mailed me saying my copy was backordered shortly after placing it at $17 on November 18.
I hope they are not trying to wait out the delivery estimate hoping I'll cancel.

I had filed my claim Sunday and the disc actually showed up yesterday - 27 days later. It came from Switzerland, not Australia. I don't know what kind of shenanigans this joint is pulling but suffice it to say I won't be using them again.
Thankfully I had already gotten a copy from Chaos which arrived in a reasonable time frame.
Anyone thinking of ordering from Westend should really think again.

I got my English-subtitled AMELIE blu-ray yesterday. This movie looks phenomenal in HD! Totally amazing quality! If you like or love the movie, this is a definite upgrade!

Canadian R1 Blu-ray now available!
For those patient enough to wait for something more . . . complete, and at an somewhat more affordable price (and with extra features that should actually play ), the Alliance/Miramax special edition blu-ray was released up here this week, seemingly with little fanfare. Picked it up tonight for $20.99 (CDN) at Future Shop (http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...fb4ebd597den02). Amazon.ca has it for $17.99 (http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B003H9LIUC/). Haven't opened or watched it yet, and won't for a while unfortunately, so can't comment on audio/video quality, etc. Hopefully others will do so soon enough.
From the package:
Video: 1080p High Definition 16x9 2.35:1 / 2 h 02 min
Audio: Francais: 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, 5.1 Dolby Digital
Subtitles: English
Extras are ported over from the 2-disc Alliance DVD from many moons ago (which I believe was identical to the Miramax version in the U.S.)
Again, from the package:
- Audio Commentaries with Jean Pierre Jeunet (English and French)
- The Look of Amelie
- Fantasies of Audrey Tautou
- Screen Tests
- Q&A with Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet
- Q&A with Director and Cast
- Storyboard Comparison
- An Intimate Chat with Jean-Pierre Jeunet
- "Home Movies" Inside the Making Of Amelie
- Trailer and TV Spots
The DVD version also included "The Amelie Scrapbook" and "Cast & Crew Filmographies", neither of which are listed on the back of the new blu-ray, though this doesn't mean they've actually been excluded (and even if they were, I'm not sure I'd miss them). I'm sure that will be confirmed soon enough.
Considering Alliance's reputation for bare-bones blu-rays up here, it was a rather pleasant surprise to see this one retain most (and maybe all) of the special features from the DVD.

Canadian Alliance Disc:
Includes all extras as listed. No more, no less. English subtitles are burned into the print and are not optional.
The image is from Axel Muisc who beats Amazon CA's price by at least $3.50 US. It is only $23.94 US from Axel and that includes shipping.
