Been a long while since I've seen it, but I do have the old Hong Kong DVD, which Eureka will no doubt improve on greatly (and charge us about 4x the price for the privilege). I recall it being really good, though, with Hung and Casanova Wong (particularly in the final scenes) both setting the tone for future projects.

Reading the tea leaves at that other forum, it would seem these 3 will for sure be packaged together.

Never thought I'd see the day where Eureka's output was predominantly HK action movies.

Re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Glad to see more stuff from the UK labels, but conversely it seems like these will never get released in Region A because so much of the Golden Harvest library is tied up with Warner and whomever else. It's a minor gripe since I'm region-free like anyone else buying these things, but still it would be nice to see the GH library better represented in North America than it has been for ages now. Warner Archive doing a couple of Jackie Chan movies just doesn't cut it.

I saw an interview the other day with George Feltenstein at Warner Archives and he indicated that Drunken Master 2 and Mr. Nice Guy did very well for them and that they would continue to exploit their Golden Harvest library going forward. He even mentioned wanting to devote an entire episode of the Warner Archive podcast to discussing their holdings.

Just give us a Blu for Pedicab Driver already!

Also... I don't know who is doing it... but I've seen a lot of insiders hint (to the extent of basically confirming) that someone is putting out a new edition of Supercop. I would think Eureka since they did Police Story 1 and 2... but not sure.

I have to assume Pedicab Driver and The Blade would be first up if WB is actually going to continue with the GH titles.

Hopefully something can be done about the Ritrovata-ness of it all when PS3 is released. The fact that we have all of these amazing HK packages but The Police Story movies are still stuck with those pee transfers is a real bummer.

Also, if PS3 does come, by my count this would leave only Twin Dragons and Island of Fire as peak era Jackie titles without a high quality bd. There are still a handful of other late period Golden Harvest titles (Thunderbolt, First Strike, Who Am I) that need a release, but for my money his peak years ended with Drunken Master 2.

The original WB Archive podcast did a couple of episodes that included their GH releases on DVD (or maybe one was for the MR. NICE GUY blu?), and other titles in their holdings were mentioned. Such a tease. I also recall them occasionally answering listener letters regarding HK titles, but usually with Feltenstein's patented "we'd love to do that one but it's not in the works at the moment" responses.

PEDICAB and BLADE would be great choices from the existing DVD releases. I still suspect it will be ages before we see much from WB, and at the rate the company is moving on those holdings, EUREKA and 88 FILMS will be eons ahead of them, with equally good transfers, much more generous supplements, and cooler packaging. I mean, they're releasing one or two classic Golden Harvest films a month! Further to that, most Hong Kong Cinema fans have long been region-free which only makes the UK editions that much more appealing. Not being region-free and waiting on WB for this stuff a company not exactly known for it's love of HK movies anyway will probably be a disappointing experience. But I doubt they'd ever sell their acquisitions to another label.

That said, having seen the new listings for DREADNAUGHT and KNOCKABOUT on the Eureka site, I'm again puzzled by their inconsistent pricing of late. Both are 17.99, while the previously announced ODD COUPLE is 18.99 (and has been from day one, I believe). I know it's petty to quibble over a 1 price difference, but these three releases are basically the same in terms of new scans, audio tracks, two commentaries on each, booklets. KNOCKABOUT actually has the most archival interviews (and two versions of the film!), but it's not the most expensive. And then there's the SKINNY TIGER Blu-ray, the main disc of which is on par with the three just mentioned in terms of content on the main disc, but they want an additional 4-5 for a four-year-old documentary packed in, probably unnecessarily, as a separate disc. But hey, I'm still buying all of them, so what do I know!

Re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Unfortunately the WB titles are pretty much exclusive to WB in the US and the UK. One of the folks involved with Eureka and 88 mentioned at some point trying to secure a WB title (pretty sure it was Pedicab) and while WB was willing to license, the cost was prohibitive. In other words, those particular titles are either coming from WB or they aren't coming. Maybe there's one or two that Criterion would be interested in, but I'm certainly not going to hold my breath.

Re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Should be announced tomorrow.

RUNNING OUT OF TIME 1 & 2 (Masters of Cinema) Two-Disc Blu-ray
Amazon Amazon

I debate getting these from Eureka because it seems like Criterion seems to be interested in putting out To’s catalog.

Has Criterion released films in North America that Eureka has rights to in the UK?

Re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Well that's good news . . . finally. Hopefully a sign that we can skip other UK imports in the future, but we'll see. Now to wonder how many of Eureka's previous releases will get the US treatment. Personally, I find neither of these films to be top tier To. They're both whimsical 'thrillers', gorgeously shot – the first one netted Andy Lau a Best Actor HKFA award. The second one was fairly twee and forgettable, so it's better to have them packaged together. Wish 88 Films could've done the same thing with the BLACK CAT films, instead of (presumably) milking us for a separate release of PART II.
