Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

I've seen that Ugetsu Monogatari is 39 Pounds at Amazon UK. Is this a sign that Eureka is nor selling the DVD anymore and is prepping a Blu Ray? That would be awesome!

If this is not a sign, and is only due to the new Late Mizoguchi box, as I buy almost everything you guys put out these days, here comes an appeal to make a Mizoguchi BD. His images are precious and he deserves high definition. Please!

Thanks.

The individual double-feature discs are most likely going OOP, to be supplanted by the boxed set. As for a Blu-ray double-dip, this was posted on MoC's Twitter, re Mizoguchi:
No Blu planned unfortch.

Thanks for the info, though sad I am to hear this. I have all the Mizoguchi's DVDs but would gladly and right away double dip the BD...

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

The two Antonioni titles will now be Blu-ray/DVD combo releases. A bit disappointing, but the prices remain the same.

Also from March onwards I think everything is to be a combo release.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

I really don't see why it is disappointing if the prices don't change. If nothing else, it will help them sell discs. Their last few releases have been region locked Blus, and those players, typically, are more expensive that region free DVD players, which can be had for $30 at Walmart. It is a very smart and responsible move on their part. This way people who haven't invested in region free blu ray players can still get the movies and be future proofed.

I really wish they'd upgrade Diary of a Lost Girl to Blu.

Same here. Pandora's Box has been rumored as a Criterion Blu-ray though, so perhaps we'll get some Louise Brooks in HD after all. Kino may also release Diary on Blu-ray, though obviously MoC would be preferable. It seems unlikely however, if we are to go by this MoC quote from the beginning of their foray into Blu-ray:
There are only a handful of catalogue titles that we would be willing to revisit for BD. Among them, Japanese titles such as KWAIDAN, ONIBABA, and big German titles such as METROPOLIS.

Le amiche:

* Beautiful new transfer of the film in its recent restoration by Cineteca di Bologna, L'Immagine Ritrovata, and Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation, in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio, and presented in a 1080p AVC encode on the Blu-ray
* A new and exclusive video introduction to the film with critic and teacher Gabe Klinger
* A new and exclusive video featuring Gabe Klinger discussing the arc of Antonioni's entire career
* Optional English subtitles
* A lengthy booklet containing newly translated critical pieces about the film, excerpts of interviews with Antonioni, and more.

La signora senza camelie:

* Beautiful new transfer of the film in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio, presented in a 1080p AVC encode on the Blu-ray
* A new and exclusive video introduction to the film with critic and teacher Gabe Klinger
* A new and exclusive video featuring Gabe Klinger discussing Antonioni in the context of the Italian production system of the 1950s
* Optional English subtitles
* A lengthy booklet containing newly translated critical pieces about the film, excerpts of interviews with Antonioni, and a lengthy debate between Antonioni and critic Luigi Chiarini on the subject of the film.

The DVDs are among the nicest looking DVDs we've ever released. They look stunning, which is why we're not waiting! Thanks!

btw. Both films have full, new, exclusive commentary tracks by David Kalat.

DVD Beaver on La Signora Senza Camelie and Le Amiche - both look fabulous. I can't wait to watch these. If only I could find a cheap region-free player already - apparently Best Buy's Insignia players have recently been outfitted with a firmware upgrade that negates the region-free capabilities, so that's out.

It's just the four previously-released double-feature discs in a box.

I meant what was your source on knowing that a box was coming. But I just visited amazon.co.uk and see it's already out.

If you don't already have the individual releases, it's a set well worth getting. Three of the films overlap with Criterion releases, but Street of Shame has a Tony Rayns commentary, and all eight films include informative Rayns video introductions.

Check out the Masters of Cinema website, if you don't already. They've had the box set up on their site for about two months now. Also, sign up for their newsletter so that you get the monthly sales newsletter for buying directly from Eureka/MOC.
