Just upgraded to HD and Blu Ray---Can you recommend 10 best BR's to get.
Hey Guys
I just joined the dark side 1 week ago and bought my 1st HDTV and Blu Ray player. I'm not abandoning DVD though. I still love my 1,000+ DVD's and will still support it.
However, I would appreciate some suggestions from you all. Would like to know if you could recommend me at least 10 of the best BR's to get. I'm talking about awesome video/audio and extras.
Here's what I have gradually picked up thus far.
1. Disney Earth
2. The Rock
3. Entrapment
4. Die Another Day
5. Braveheart: Sapphire Series
6. Gladiator: Sapphire Series
7. Miami Vice
8. Terminator 2: Skynet Edition
9. X-Files: Fight the Future/I Want to Believe 2-pack
I realize that most of this stuff that I picked up is not the best BR's out there. Most of it I picked up relatively cheap (under $20 each except X-Files, which I got for cheap as well)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Whatever you do, don't let Gladiator be the first BD you watch because the PQ is a train wreck. Braveheart on the other hand, is amazing.
With that said, I tried to cover a variety of genres that all have fantastic BD releases. You should be happy picking any of these up.
- Apocalypto
- Big Trouble in Little China
- Casablanca
- Hot Fuzz
- How the West Was Won
- The Orphanage
- Pushing Daises
- Repulsion CC
- Shaun of the Dead
- Wall-E

Rambo
Baraka
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Apocalypto
The Seventh Seal
Blade Runner
Casino Royale
Hot Fuzz/SotD
Master and Commander
Band of Brothers
10 good starters that can pretty much all be used as demo discs. Tried to mostly pick stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet but can't recommend Apocalypto and Blade Runner enough no matter how many people also do

I tried to pick a few I didn't see mentioned yet
My favorites:
Dark Knight - must own Batman movie
Greatest Game Ever Played - reference quality PQ and AQ, great sports drama
Independence Day - like watching the movie for the first time all over again
Into The Blue - More like a travelogue but the colors are spectacular
Stealth - kick ass sound in a so-so movie
will also recommend:
Casino Royale
Band Of Brothers

I would agree to all the above! Disney/Pixar stuff, no doubt. Also, the Disney animated films such as Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, and Snow White (which is coming out in October).

Re: Just upgraded to HD and Blu Ray---Can you recommend 10 best BR's to get.
I'll suggest the following:
Any (and all) Seasons of Lost
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Coraline
Spider-Man Trilogy
The Dark Knight
Anything Pixar
Gattaca
Kill Bill V.1 and V.2
The Seventh Seal
Signs
Sweeney Todd
True Blood Season 1
Sin City
There's more, to be sure, but that seems to be a pretty good list of things I'd recommend based on quality of content, PQ, and AQ. I know Signs isn't one most people rave about for PQ but it looks beautiful to me - reminds me of my experience with it in the theater, and is legions above the DVD release. The Uncompressed PCM audio on that is unbelievably good too.

I definitely second Planet Earth and any of the Disney or Pixar animated movies.
I'd also add The Simpsons Movie to the list.

Definetly check out Blade Runner. Best looking Blu Ray I have ever seen. You should also look at The Dark Knight just for the IMAX scenes. The 35mm stuff look horrible.

You should watch The Dark Knight in it's entirety because it's a great movie and all of the scenes look great. Some movies not to get because they look terrible: Gangs of New York, Gladiator.

Hmmm.. 10 movies to get, not including whats on your list.
Well, first off, I wont suggest anything that ONLY comes in a set. Not fair in me telling you to buy something that you can only get if you spend however much the set costs, even if it's something you should have (Bourne Trilogy). With that being said..
Pirates of the Carribean - COTBP
Pirates of the Carribean - DMC
Pirates of the Carribean - AWE (buy them together or separate - get the best price)
Cars
Crimson Tide
Iron Man
Shooter
The Matrix (only movie of the three that you can buy separately)
Kingdom of Heaven
Apocalypto
That should hold you until it's time to do 10 more. =)

Re: Just upgraded to HD and Blu Ray---Can you recommend 10 best BR's to get.
It's probably too late, but I think you should have bought Planet Earth instead of the Disney one, which is just PE edited down with a different narrator.
I don't like to recommend specific movies much, because I think you're better off getting movies you like without worrying about demo material. I would just recommend looking up reviews and checking screenshots of movies you like, then decide if it's worth it. DVD Beaver and Blu-ray.com (be sure to register for the latter to get full resolution shots) are both good sources for screenshots.
That said, The Searchers and Unforgiven happen to be $7.99 and $8.99, respectively, on Amazon right now, and those are great if you're looking for something cheap to help start your collection.

Just FYI, since you also mentioned audio, check out Akira. That's if you have the hardware for it!
