Based On Popular Demand: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Extends Worldwide Blu-ray Combo Pack Efforts through December 2010 Exceptional Value, Quality & Versatility Included In The Purchase of Any Disney-Branded Blu-ray Disc BURBANK, Calif.— August 11, 2009 – In a time when price, quality and value are top of mind with consumers, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (WDSHE) today announces the extension of it’s Blu-ray Combo Pack initiatives worldwide, providing extended utility of DVD and exceptional quality of a Blu-ray Disc in a single value-pack. The Combo Packs will now be available across all Disney-branded Blu-ray titles releasing through December of 2010. In a recent online survey* of US home entertainment consumers conducted by WDSHE and an independent market research company, Lieberman Research Worldwide showed that the value of the Combo Pack is undeniable for consumers. More than 77% consumers that intend to embrace Blu-ray technology in the near future agree that Combo Packs are a better value than purchasing a DVD or Blu-ray alone. “Since introducing the industry’s first Blu-ray Combo Pack in Fall of 2008, we’ve seen tremendous consumer interest towards the purchase of product that come fully-loaded with extras that fit into their budgets, desires and lifestyles,” commented Bob Chapek, President of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. “The Disney Blu-ray Combo Pack is the perfect marriage of value, quality and versatility all wrapped-up in a single package.” Some of the upcoming Combo Pack titles families can look forward to include an exciting new slate of Disney-branded theatrical, Diamond and Video Premiere titles, such as Hannah The Montana The Movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, UP and Santa Buddies. WDSHE first pioneered the Combo Pack – a Blu-ray Disc plus a standard definition DVD in a single package – with the Blu-ray release of Sleeping Beauty in October of 2008 to, at the time, allow consumers without Blu-ray players the opportunity to “future proof” their collections. Today, you can find two different models of the Disney Blu-ray Combo Pack on shelf: (1) A Blu-ray + DVD and/or (2) A Blu-ray + DVD + DisneyFile Digital Copy of the movie. Additional Blu-ray Combo Packs current available in the marketplace include Race To Witch Mountain, Bedtime Stories, Bolt, Pinocchio and High School Musical 3: Senior Year. I like the idea of Blu+DVD+Digital Copy (I like it a lot actually because my parents who I share a lot of titles with havn't upgraded to blu yet), but $44.xx is just insanity for a single Movie!

I like the concept of combo disks (I don't like or need digital copies), but I would like the option for separate sales, since I would only buy the Combo on titles that are likely to be played elsewhere. Since most people have more SDVD players than BD players, it is a little odd to pay a bunch of money for a disk you can only play in one or two places.
Plus that's usually the "main" viewing area, I could see a benefit in letting a kid take the SDVD to a different room, or in the car, or on a vacation, etc., so it makes sense for Disney to do it. But yeah, 35-45$ is a whole lot for one movie, even if you get two or three copies of it. Another annoyance is the name "Combo pack", that just sounds dorky. At least it's not "Combo Pak". |

But who is actually paying 44.99 for a movie? You and i both know thats only the list price. for example Race to Witch mountain can be had right now this very moment at frys for 24.49 and when you factor in disneys 10 off coupon it brings it down to a very affordable 14.49
even on amazon its 24.99, and best buy has it for 26.99 so if someone is actually paying full list price they have only their selfs to blame as its not that hard to track down movies on sale.

Your shooting yourself in the foot, though what happens one day if you want to sell the bluray (cause you find yourself not watching it as much as you thought you might or other reasons) you definately wont get very much if its missing two of the discs from the package.
especially on disney platinum titles where they surely become a premium collectors items once they are placed in the vault. i would be careful going around talking about selling the digital copies and the activation codes and ineffect as you say "denying disney more retail sales" but to each their own.

you are correct about that, they might not always be availble but atleast in these early stages they are are helping to offset retail prices,(the only one that i believe are offering cupons on their high profile titles anyways)but even with out the coupon frys and a few other retailers usually have titles from disney between 20.99 and 26.99

Disney can't do jack about selling the DVDs/DCs. Some of us want to make the cost of buying their expensive Combo packs less and this is the way to do it. |

Retailers may not be heavily discounting Disney BDs all the time. I'm sure it's costing them more to get Disney BDs, so in turn, they're going to charge the consumer more. I still can't figure out why anyone would defend higher prices. I could understand Bob Chapek defending them. |

People will bitch about anything. I haven't paid any more for any of the titles listed than other BDs that I have purchased in the last few months. They're tossing in extra discs and people are bitching about the prices. Now, I'm not expecting Disney to sell us all of this for 14.99 but I'll be damned if I haven't come close to that as an average with the various 10 dollar off coupons that I have gotten for their recent releases. What other studio regularly offers 10 dollar off coupons along with a copy of the dvd and the Blu-Ray?

But the price I average on these combo packs is usually less than what I pay for other titles (except Anchor Bay horror films). Their MSRP isn't usually what the price is at the store (if you shop around) plus the ten dollar off coupon that has come with quite a few of their recent releases. I can't bitch about having three versions of the movie when I have a child that might want to watch it in the car or on the PS3 or even the laptop while at the airport. If I was really paying 30-40 bucks a movie then I would be pissed but I've paid less than 20 for each of the titles previously mentioned.
