Re: Studios experimenting with Blu-ray releases preceding DVDs

Not really.

DVD was a paradigm shift, where as BD is more of an evolution of an existing product. VHS was never the cash cow DVD is, and movies did not sell on VHS near as well as the do now on DVD. Finally, VHS was clearly being replaced by DVD when that shift occurred. BD replacing DVD is a very much debatable topic.

The VHS>DVD transition is not analogous to the DVD>BD situation.

Thats because most VHS releases initally were in the $80 to $100 msrp range
except for high profile titles like starwars, or disney animated features, or big summer blockbusters.

\ when dvd first came out there was doubt as well that it would ever fully replace vhs. (big reason why it took stores like circuit city and biglots forever to begin expanding the dvd movie selections they had) by the 3rd year it became obvious that it was heading that it would but those first 2 years it was not so much a given.

Well, with this and Dance Flick at least opponents can rest easy knowing it's only crap getting this treatment... so far.

All accurate and true. In fact you are making my point that DVD is a completely separate market from VHS where BD is an evolution of the DVD market.

You also illustrate my point that it wasn't until DVD was the clear successor that VHS was phased out.

We are more than three years out from BD's launch and it's heir apparent status is very much debatable.

When DVD was first announced I wasn't sure if it would be a format to replace LaserDisc or VHS. Turned out to be both. I think 1999 was the last of LaserDisc and 2005 for VHS.

You're right, DVD new releases were marketed to be sold to customers (like LaserDisc) rather than sell them to the video chains to be rented, which was the VHS model.

Blu-ray is the same sales idea as DVD except with the prices being relatively high, mixed with consumers re-thinking their over-zealous movie buying habits, renting seems to be making a comeback via Redbox.

Though the studios aren't getting $89.95 per title anymore!

That was because the studios expected most of the initial market to be rental and priced the releases accordingly. Once the rental windows elapsed, prices dropped.

Come to think of it, this is still going on with DVD, albeit without such dramatic price differentials.
