I've recently completed a degree in Film Studies here in the UK. During my three years, I wrote a paper on Hitchcock which was supervised by the University's Hitchcock Professor. Anyway, I discussed North by Northwest with him one day (it's my favourite film of all time) and that very scene was brought up. He told me that Hitchcock had filmed the sequence a few times over to get the right expression out of Cary Grants character. Hitchcock saw the kid plugging his ears and loved it, so he used that very cut in the film. Typical Hitchcockian humour.

Back on topic. Looking forward to getting my Star Trek BD steelbook. It's already been dispatched, I'm expecting it Friday or Saturday. Personally, I'd give the film five stars. I thought it was truer to the spirit of TOS than any other film in the series.

Re: Star Trek: Nov 17

Really? You can't see that being true? After all Hitchcock once (jokingly) commented that he wished he could make Abraham Lincoln's nose sneeze when Cary Grant climbed onto it. The message is clear, North by Northwest isn't supposed to be taken so seriously. It's a comedy. I really doubt that Hitchcock's expert eye would miss such an obvious flub.

I believe this story has been mentioned elsewhere BTW. Can't put my finger on where though. Perhaps the commentary track or making-of documentary?

Anyway, thanks for the pretty picture. Now next time lets try and respond with words.

Back on topic: I like parts Final Frontier but it's no more TOS than say, The Voyage Home IMO. The Motion Picture was essentially Star Trek does 2001 and The Wrath of Khan was a reboot, from then on they never got back to making a *real* TOS movie until the new one.

I was kidding about The Final Frontier. I think the only spirit that movie channels is crap season 3 TOS episodes like Spock's Brain.

True. I like the camp fire scenes and the general concept, it just went a little pear shaped somewhere along the way. Probably due to Shatner's direction and Paramount's budget cutting.

I've been watching my Amazon (BD) order over the last few weeks as the price slowly creeps down.

With my Gold Box discount, it finally dipped under $20 this morning.

I think it's season three bad, but I don't think it's Spock's Brain bad.

I still one day would love to see paramount give shatner a chance to make a directors cut of final frontier, if paramount hadnt kept cutting the budget he could have had a pretty decent film. No matter what flaws it might have as is there really are a number of scenes at film that do a great job at captureing the feel of the original series. in particular the relationship between kirk spock and mccoy.

Yeah, when they were doing the SEs for 2-Disc DVD, there was talk of Shatner putting together a 'director's cut' of sorts. I believe that it was going to cost somewhere around $1 million to finalize (CGI rock monsters and other shit like that) and Paramount didn't want to sink the costs into it.

Personally, I think that it would have paid for itself, what with additional sales of a title that would otherwise be skipped by many. (Those additional sales carrying over onto blu-ray and other formats as well.)

But, no one has seen fit to hand me the studio checkbook yet, so...

Yeah, that's my point. It was a flub but what I'm saying is that Hitchcock saw it, had a choice of not using that take but decided to leave it in because it's humorous.

Something to freezeframe when you get your copy:

R2D2 floating in Trek space and it's been confirmed by ILM.

Awesome.

Re: Star Trek: Nov 17

There doesn't seem to be tons of exclusives for this, which is weird as they would sell tons due to ST fans. Compared to the TF2 stuff it's quite sad.
I suppose we just have to wait for a certain someone to get everything for us so we can compare.

Out of curiosity, how many "tons" were you expecting?

Target has an exclusive version with the plastic Enterprise case...
Best Buy has an exclusive version with the badges...
Amazon has an exclusive version with the metal Enterprise replica...
FYE has an exclusive steelbook case for the DVD...
Futureshop has an exclusive steelbook for the BD....

Seems like a lot to me...

Ah ha! I knew R2 was in the movie somewhere, but after seeing it five times, I was never able to find him.

Re: Star Trek: Nov 17

Better pics of the Target-exclusive Enterprise packaging from HERE

The poster is from Australia and these are of the DVD version of the packaging, though I can't see it being any different for the Blu-Ray, but you never know. He also mentions that there is a standard keepcase for the discs should you not want to store them in the saucer. Does anyone have the North American blu-ray version that can confirm?
