Wallace and Gromit - September 22nd

From blu-ray.com. I'm really looking forward to this!

Wallace and Gromit Shorts Coming to Blu-ray

Our favorite English clay-made inventor/cheese connoisseur and his very resourceful pet dog are stop-motioning their way onto BD. Hit Entertainment, which specializes in TV products for children, is entering the Blu-ray arena with the release of 'Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Collection' on September 22.

The disc will include all four Wallace and Gromit shorts: "A Grand Day Out", "The Wrong Trousers", "A Close Shave" and "A Matter of Loaf and Death". There is no information on technical specifications or special features at this time.

The original aspect ratio of the first three shorts is 1.33:1, whereas "A Matter of Loaf and Death" is 1.78:1. Hopefully Hit Entertainment will respect the respective original aspect ratios, unlike what they did with the Wallace and Gromit spinoff 'Shaun the Sheep', which is cropped to 1.33:1 in the US DVDs.

It might be noted that this is not really a complete collection, as it lacks the only feature film starring these two characters: 'Wallace and Gromit in: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit'. However, the rights for that movie belong to Dreamworks Animation. Similarly, no mention is made of the "Cracking Contraptions" webshorts.

Thanks for the info. I'll be watching the aspect ratio issue closely on this one!

Since Blu-ray is natively 16:9, there's no excuse for them to screw Loaf and Death up. However, my fear is that they'll crop/stretch the 4:3 shorts to 16:9.

OAR is a must, or this is not worth purchasing.

Added in art to OP.

Looks nice, but I'm still curious about the aspect ratios.

Being a W&G fan since a Grand Day Out, I'm really looking forward to this. Maybe it will light a fire under Dreamworks to release Curse.

Also, maybe someday we'll see a total Ardman collection on BD. Creature Comforts, all the Shaun shorts, etc.

This was my only pickup for today. Great collection! The first two shorts, A Grand Day Out and The Wrong Trousers are 1.33:1, while A Close Shave and the brand new A Matter of Loaf and Death (another great addition!) is 1.66:1. All have standard 5.1 and 2.0 surround as well as PCM 5.1 in addition to all the extras listed a few posts above. Definitely a must buy for any fan. All look and sound great.

Got this today at Fry's - looking forward to it.

One note - the box says 1.78:1 for AMOLAD.

Yep, you are correct, Loaf is 1.78:1.I was suprised to see A Close Shave was anamorphic.

The word anamorphic doesn't apply to Blu-rays.

Chew 09-23-09 06:53 AM

Hopefully a sign of things to come: Amazon has the complete collection on DVD for $21.99 while the Blu-Ray is $19.99. :)

Then I'll rephrase - The first two shorts, A Grand Day Out and The Wrong Trousers are 1.33:1. So they have black bars on the sides.....hope this works for you...

I loved that the blu-ray and SDdvd of this were the same price.

Is this the first time this has happened?

One of the posters above said A Close Shave's OAR was 1.33:1. Was he incorrect, or did they stretch it or chop off parts of the image to make it widescreen? Also, is Shaun the Sheep at 1.78 or 1.33?

Nope. Happened with a few other titles where the BD was only a few bucks more or the same price. Usually smaller studios.

The sad thing...its possible they raised the DVD set to make the 'savings' look better. But $20 for what you get is a fantastic value but Lionsgate has been great on these TV releases (Mad Men, Weeds). Other studios need to follow.

I've seen "a few bucks more" plenty of times. SAME price, I've never seen before, small studio or not.

I have on Amazon but I can't recall specific titles (on release week of course). It's possible they raised the DVD price to make the BD set look like even a better bargain. Does not affect us as Blu-ray buyers though.

$20 seems like too much to me... but I do want it. I dunno. I may get it soon, but I may wait. On this title I certainly feel somewhat indecisive.
