Stop Making Sense: 10/13/09

From Blu-ray.com:
In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Palm Pictures and Umvd/Visual Entertainment will release the Talking Heads concert film 'Stop Making Sense' on Blu-ray on October 13. No information on audio or video specifications or special features is available yet.

The set list is as follows:

1. Psycho Killer
2. Heaven
3. Thank You for Sending Me an Angel
4. Found a Job
5. Slippery People
6. Burning Down the House
7. Life During Wartime
8. Making Flippy Floppy
9. Swamp
10. What a Day That Was
11. This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)
12. Once in a Lifetime
13. Genius of Love (Tom Tom Club)
14. Girlfriend is Better
15. Take Me to the River
16. Crosseyed and Painless

Stop Making Sense' is widely considered to be one of the finest concert films of all time. It was directed by Jonathan Demme ('The Silence of the Lambs') and lensed by cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth ('Blade Runner'), with an approach that intently avoided many genre clichés: no fast cutting, no audience shots, no flashy color scheme. Instead, uniqueness is achieved by novel ideas such as opening on a bare stage, expressionistic lighting or David Byrne's famous "big suit".

All right! I can't wait! I saw the re-release of this in the theater and it was a blast. One of my all time favorites.

I would assume 'Cities/I Zimbra' will be included as a supplement.

Re: Stop Making Sense: 10/13/09

Yeah, this was mentioned in the release thread, but I think it deserves its own.

The DVD had two different 5.1 mixes: a theatrical mix and a studio mix. I hope we get both of those in lossless, but I won't be upset if it's just the theatrical mix.

I just came in my giant pants a little bit.

This along with "The Last Waltz" are the only two concert films I really need. The collection is complete.

Re: Stop Making Sense: 10/13/09

Talking Heads pushed me into one new format with the Stop Making Sense DVD back in 1999 and into another (a dead format at that) with the Brick dualdisc set in 2005. If I didn't already have a PS3, this would be all it would take to force me to go Blu. Hell, if this was only coming out on HD-DVD, even now I'd buy a player to get it.

This is the hi-def release of the year for me.

Re: Stop Making Sense: 10/13/09

Agreed. And to add insult to injury, not only was Brick in a dead format, but the dualdiscs were also authored so that the hi-def audio (the whole reason that I bought the set) didn't play on at least half of the available players... including mine. That was an angry day.

That's great that they included both 5.1 mixes in lossless, plus a 2-channel option.

Re: Stop Making Sense: 10/13/09

When I was at TIFF the other week, there was a free outdoor screening of this movie right in the heart of the city at lunchtime. My wife and I were walking by just as it started. We decided to stay for the first song or two, but wound up staying for the whole thing. It was a very unique way to watch a movie.

People came and went during the film, but there was a Talking Heads superfan a couple rows ahead of us who was really into it. He'd applaud after every song like a live concert. The concept of applauding at a recorded performance seemed a little foreign to me, but his enthusiasm kind of made the experience fun. Little-by-little, other people joined in. By the end of the show, it was practically like being at a real concert.

I think that was actually because of the Dualdisc format itself. Dualdiscs are essentially a regular size and a regular size DVD glued back to back (it's more technical than that, but yeah), so Dualdiscs are thicker than normal CDs or DVDs, which means they fall outside the technical specifications of either format, and thus players may not be able to play them. Same thing happened with that Bjork box set Rhino released a while ago.
