You missed #33, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I suspect we'll be waiting a long time on some of those, if they ever come out on BD. Hell, we don't even have all 100 on DVD yet.

Thanks. I've corrected the list. Wow, I didn't know not all were even on DVD, yet!

Man, we need Singin' In The Rain on BD yesterday. Also, I can't believe Schindler's List is in the top 10. What a joke.

Re: AFI's Top 100 - How many are Blu?

Since you're counting titles which aren't yet available but have been announced, then you'll want to add the following:
20 IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)
21 CHINATOWN (1974)
41 KING KONG (1933)
94 PULP FICTION (1994)
Also, I seem to recall that there's a DVD release planned for "The African Queen" -- can't remember, though, whether or not there's a Blu-ray version in the works as well.

Re: AFI's Top 100 - How many are Blu?

Wow, taking a look at the list I'm surprised by how many films I feel are out of place on it. Certainly, I have seen most of those films, and most of them are classics - but I can't believe some of these movies rank as high as they do. Nonetheless, I hope that someday every film on AFI's Top 100 will be available on Blu-ray. They deserve to be.

That rumor seems to come up every year now. The latest one was shot down too. At least it sounds like they're working on it.

Forrest Gump is slated for later this year.

Lawrence of Arabia is supposed to be in the works, but I don't know when we'll get it.

Spartacus was released on HD DVD by Universal. Since their BD catalog output has consisted mostly of those titles, it's probably only a matter of time before it gets released. The transfer wasn't that great though, IIRC.

I picked up an import copy of The African Queen years ago. Can't believe it's not on DVD in the US.

I agree. Schindler is a high-caliber film, but certainly not top 10 material!

Are these officially announced? Are they up for pre-order anywhere? Can you submit references or links if possible? Thanks!

By the way, that list in the first post is the revised version from 2007. You can see the original list here, which has films like The Third Man, which has been released on Blu-ray by Criterion.

Pulp Fiction is supposedly coming later this year. Don't expect the rest until next year.

I don't know about the others, but Chinatown is definitely not officially announced.

Looks like it's been released in Norway and France already. Updated list.

The Sixth Sense does not belong on that list, and LOTR is ranked way too high.

That's all I have to add to this thread.

MASH is coming (9/1). So, is Forest Gump (11/3).

I'm hoping to see a 50th anniversary Psycho next year.

Isn't this supposed to be a list of American films? I don't understand what LOTR is doing on it at all. I guess money still talks. Same with Lawrence of Arabia.

They're productions of US studios.

Like I said, money talking. Aside from financing, there was precious little American involvement in either production.

Normally country of origin is not that important to me other than as a potential cultural indicator for films I might like to see, but in this case it's the AFI "claiming" certain films as American, which in these two cases (at least) strikes me as rather arrogant.

Plenty of British directors (including David Lean) have gone to work for American studios. Ridley Scott; Alfred Hitchcock; Charlie Chaplin. Their American films are still American films.

But Lawrence of Arabia? At least LOTR had some American actors, even if it was otherwise as non-American as kidney pie.

I have this image of some exec at New Line clutching a print of LOTR and muttering "my precious" under his breath.

Arrogant? I might make the argument that to do otherwise would be arrogant. In these cases, US companies decided to make films. How are they anything but US films? James Bond movies shoot on-location all over the world. Are they not British productions?

Exactly.

If you're counting some of David Lean's movies for US studios as US movies (but not Lawrence of Arabia), I'd like to know which ones. Did Lean ever do any shooting in the US?

Star Wars was shot (largely) in England with a (mostly) English cast and crew. Is that not a US movie?

My sincerest apologies. My information seems to have been colored by the recent "news" from digitalbits which was cited here. If I'd been consciously aware of the fact that I was basing my info on an article from that site, I would've done a little more homework before posting.
