Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
Yesterday my son and I wanted to watch the PoTC trilogy. I can't believe the amount of crap Disney makes you go thru before you finally get to a main menu screen. It's ridiculous. I think it was 1 Blu-Ray promo trailer, and 5 movie trailers, followed by some stupid disclamer messages. Even skipping thru them it takes a few minutes because some are forced on you. I have the PS3 and can't even skip to the Top Menu.
I have never keep track since I don't watch movies that often but I know I have put in some Blu-Rays and they go straight to a Menu without all that other crap. I remember this same thing being a nuisance back in my DVD days but I just felt like venting. By the way, all the PoTC movies come from Disney who is probably the worst in this regard. |
Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
Yeah, Disney are pretty much the worst for the up-front (and, often, unskippable) crap. It's especially frustrating/disappointing because their BDs are consistently among the best in every other respect.
And speaking of respect, come on Disney- give your customers some! |
Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
Lionsgate are the worst for me. A plethora of trailers that you have to skip through, one by one.

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
But it's not the different compared to the DVDs Disney or Lionsgate puts out.

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
I never understood why they force Blu-Ray commercials on a Blu-Ray Disc. On a DVD release maybe, but if we are watching, we already own a player and some discs...you don't need to sell us on the format anymore!

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
My point exactly. I don't care for Sony's BD demo on BD Discs. I know how good the freaking PQ and SQ is on BD. I own it and I know how it is so spare me. You want to add that in 1080p HD on a DVD!! I'm sure it might take almost 250-500MB of space, but you could squeeze it in the dual layer DVD!!!

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
Lionsgate and Disney are both terrible about this. I think Lionsgate is worse, if only for the fact that they keep forcing the same crappy trailers at the start of all their new discs. Seriously, why are they still advertising The Punisher and Lord of War on every new release? At least Disney updates their trailers every few months.
Paramount was annoying me recently as well. Every single disc in the Star Trek box set starts with a trailer for the new Trek movie and an ad for the TOS Season 1 Blu-ray. Every single disc. |
Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
Disney. Its like 10 freaking trailers. And there is always a delay between pressing Chapter Skip.
|
Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
I'm probably the only one that doesn't mind Disney putting the trailers on the disc at startup. If I get to one I don't want to watch I just use the remote.

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
I agree Disney is notorious for filling the disk with tons of crap you have to either skip through or endure.
Their "Fast Play" option isn't so fast, either. The quickest way to cut to the feature I found is when you finally reach the menu, don't click on "Play Movie". Go to "chapter selection" and choose chapter one. Otherwise you're usually in for more disclaimers & ads. |

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
Disney is the worst, and add to that, not being able to resume play on titles, so if you stop, you have to go through all that again.

As annoying as that is, I am sure the reason for it is because those exact same discs will be available separately this fall as standalone releases...they have to make sure if someone only buys one of the six films later this year that they too will get to experience the old ass ST trailer and TOS S1 ad!

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
While the Disney ones can get annoying to say the least I have to say that Lionsgate takes the cake. Anyone who has watched a "Master's of Horror" DVD knows what I'm talking about. In the complete first season set you have to sit through a trailer for every single MoH from that season except the one your watching ontop of two lionsgate commercials and a really bad "awake" rip-off with Ben Stiller's wife...

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
Um, I've always been able to skip past all the trailers on the Disney Blu-ray. Could this just be something with the way the PS3 runs Blu-rays? I just hit "Top Menu" and it takes me right to the main menu.

Lionsgate disables Top Menu entirely. When they put 17 trailers before a movie, you have to skip each one individually. Does the PS3 even have a Top Menu command? I use the Nyko Blu-wave adaptor, and it doesn't offer that function. |

The Top Menu command is something that studios can disable if they wish. As awil1026 said, Disney makes you skip past their "Away we go" promo, but will let you use Top Menu to bypass the rest of the trailers that follow.

Re: Studios with worst Blu-Ray startup
It's pretty obvious why Disney does this. Most parents will sit their kid down in front of the Disney DVD of the day, hit play, then walk away (or the kids will know enough to get the disc in the machine and make it go). Which means little Ashely gets to see those trailers over and over and over again. Which means little Ashley is pretty soon going to start begging mommy and daddy for the newest direct-to-dvd Disney release every chance they can get until mommy and daddy relent, restarting the entire process.
