Valentine's date is going down in flames, to salvage you put in:

All of these are CC except one... Are they hinting that they will release Inland Empire?? Hmm...
Also a Flash sale could be coming today...or within the next two weeks.

It would make sense given Criterion's relationship with Lynch, but it seems like a big waste. In addition to being a flat-out terrible movie, Inland Empire was shot on ultra-crappy standard-def video and there's nothing Criterion (or anyone else) can do to make it look watchable.

Criterion is a niche and 4K is a niche. They're not the kind of niches that work together.
I could only see it working if they did one of those partnerships with a major studio on a major title and it was in a combo pack (but then you'd have people complaining about the combo packs...)

I don't think it's impossible, but I'm not optimistic about heavy support by Criterion. I suspect the most likely course would be if a filmmaker insisted upon it, like Soderbergh (who had a 4K remaster and HDR grade done for Sex, Lies, and Videotape) or Wes Anderson (say, for Isle of Dogs, which was prepped for Ultra HD Blu-ray but didn't make it to retail). That, or being embarrassed if their competition on the other side of the Atlantic dove into Ultra HD Blu-ray and siphoned away a bit of their market. But would it ever amount to more than a handful of titles (if that)? I hope so, but... I'd imagine seeing 4K titles on their streaming service would be a bellwether.

I'm just thinking the overall catalog and what percentage of films in their vault could truly benefit from a good 4K remaster, let alone releasing it that way. My guess it's very small.

I think a decent percentage of their current Blu-ray releases come from 4K remasters, so no remastering would be necessary.

If Kino can put out UHD's, Criterion can too. I don't think it will be a regular occurence, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

I actually expect them to go 4K within three years. It's an untapped revenue stream for them...they'd be silly to ignore it.

Different times. Physical Media was still a money maker when they started making Blu-rays.
Samsung just announced today they are out of the 4k Blu Ray player buisness.

It's not going to give companies like Criterion a positive outlook to start making 4k discs when big companies pull of manufacturing players.
It's not impossible Criterion would test the water with a few discs but it's looking bleak.

Yea, Criterion sees what's happening and will be very cautious about releasing 4K discs. Things have changed a lot since DVD and BD were released.
Criterion is pushing their own streaming service now, among the many streaming services available.
Companies are actually getting out of optical discs altogether. Oppo is bailing on what used to be their bread and butter - optical disc players.
Sony releases the PS4 Pro without UHD, and there's talk of MS releasing an XBOX without an optical drive at all.
I have a 4K UHD player only because it's built into my XBOX One X. I don't own any 4K movies though. Hell, I don't even own a physical copy of a game - they're all digital.

House of Games please. We need a lot more Mamet in Criterion’s catalog.

Holy shit, Blue Velvet! Guess I haven't been keeping up on this thread.
And to House of Games. Loved that movie.
