I'm pretty sure the Owl means that new Zach Snyder film is getting the deluxe Criterion treatment. About time! Now we can put the rumors to rest.

I'm operating on the assumption that any title with a pre-existing DVD release gets a Blu-ray edition if Criterion put it out. Plus, Blow Out is a relatively high profile film from a well-known director.

DVD Beaver on Night of the Hunter
Goddamn! Four hours of extras, all in HD, and a fantastic-looking transfer? I can't wait for Tuesday! Really, is there anyone NOT buying this, especially for $13 and change?

$13 and change? I thought it was $19.99 through B&N right now. Or are you talking member's pricing?

Two links to Night of the Hunter, but none to Modern Times?

Sorry, I meant member pricing. But the $25 membership is a no-brainer: you'd make that up with the first 5 Criterions you used $5 off coupons on. I did forget that Hunter is $49.99 list, so it would be $17.49 before tax and after coupons.

YMMV on the $5 coupon usage, of course. Takes some string-pulling for some.

They had it at the Grove and the 3rd Street Promenade yesterday. I would call them both.

I'm stoked for "Blow Out." I almost bought a used copy of the MGM disc recently. I might be the only one out there who thinks it's DePalma's best film.

I doubt that. It's generally considered to be one of his best, if not THE best. You could make an argument for Dressed to Kill or perhaps Carrie. I've always found his very early films with De Niro interesting as well.

Blow Out's a solid film, if a little dated.

It's actually a bit more. Criterion has put a rare $49.95 MSRP on it.

You guys mentioning DePalma had me confused because I thought Blow Out was a film by Antonioni, alas I was thinking of Blow Up.

The firework FX look terrible (probably more so in HD!), and Nancy Allen's acting is often criticized, though I find her broad, New Yawk tone to be endearing. She's a sweet, dumb kid, which makes
Spoiler:
her death all the more tragic.
I definitely think it's one of Travolta's strongest performances.

If only it was Blow Up...I'm not too excited about Blow Out.

You're going to replace your Blow-Up DVD with the Blow Out release?

I liked Blow Out, it was good even if it was a poor man's Blow-Up. I won't be grabbing it, but I really hope Criterion eventually releases Blow-Up on BD. A true masterpiece.

Since Night of the Hunter will be $22.50 after member discount, you shouldn't have to deal with a cashier denying the coupon because of the total being under $20.

That shouldn't matter regardless since the coupon clearly stipulates that it's good for titles over $20 before any discounts are applied.

It shouldn't matter, but many B&N employees have trouble with reading comprehension. Many have been denied because the total was $18 even though the coupon clearly states the selling price is the price before the standard member discount is applied. At least with the $50 list price titles, you won't run into this problem.

Is Criterion putting Blown Away on blu-ray with Tommie Lee Jones and Jeff Bridges?

The way you phrased this post makes me guess you're not aware that Blow Out is a remake of Blow Up, which may be of interest to you.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I wouldn't label it a remake per se - Blow Out takes the basic premise of Blow-Up and uses in it the service of a different plot. That would be like calling Body Double a remake of Vertigo and/or Rear Window.
