re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Anyone see this movie? I never heard of. Sounds great though. Love Jordan’s stuff, though haven’t seen his most famous or infamous in The Crying Game. Not sure why I haven’t seen it. Maybe cause I know the twist already makes me not eager, but I have it, should see this cultural icon of a movie. Revered as much as parodied. No reason unless I’m homophobic, which I’m not, but maybe subconscious. Hmmm. Seriously I should see it, I should become more focused, I should stop smoking…

Anyway, the movie, out Tuesday, anyone see?

It's fine. Well written/acted. Not something I'd ever want to own and/or watch again.

I liked it, but I saw it on University shortly after its theatrical run and haven’t seen it since. Pretty sure it was the first thing that I saw Bob Hoskins in.

The Crying Game works fine whether you know the twist or not. I saw the movie very early, at the beginning of its initial limited release, before there'd been any hype around it. I didn't even know there was supposed to be a plot twist. Yet I figured it out right away, at the character's first introduction. Frankly, I thought it was plainly obvious, not surprising at all to anyone except the main character. It's still a good movie. It has a lot going on beyond that plot twist.

^ I’ll check it out. Thx. And Mona Lisa is streaming on HBO Max and it’s the restoration as it says Criterion Collection before starts.

so worth a purchase? Is there a good Blu out there with nice extras or stream fine? Is it rewatchable? Mean kinda drab and dark with of course, great acting by Rea and Davidson, who both nominated.

** why the hell don’t they even have on Blu???**

DV on The Red Shoes! Yes!

Now bring me Colonel Blimp, A Matter of Life and Death and Black Narcissus. I'll take I Know Where I'm Going on blu while they're at it.

Tales of Hoffman in 4K would be insane!
(I don't think they've put that out on blu yet, so it might need a new 8K transfer, if they haven't already done it)

Tales of Hoffman has already been restored. Studio Canal released it in the UK on Blu. I think a 4k might be coming? Don't remember. That was one title Criterion lost the rights to years back, but the chatter online suggests they may have gotten back now that Studio Canal is sharing again. There was also talk that Thelma Schoonmaker specifically wants Criterion to release it.

Why would it need an 8K transfer?

It's good. Had the Arrow for years.

Doesn't mean it has anywhere near 8K worth of detail on the negative.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

We’re also hearing that a new 4K restoration of Miloš Forman’s Amadeus (1984) might be coming in the months ahead from Criterion, licensed to them by Warner Bros. This would include at least the theatrical version, which Forman ultimately considered to be his official director’s cut. (What’s been commonly known as the director’s cut was apparently felt by Forman to be a “DVD Cut” only.)

Long long overdue, and a Criterion offering. Too bad Forman is no longer around to provide additional extras and guidance.

I love that movie, but the DVD/Blu Ray is already loaded with extras. Wish they'd do a special edition of Ragtime. I guess Paramount doesn't license much to Criterion.

I think it will be worth it just to have the theatrical version on something besides DVD. I appreciate the longer cut, but I don't think it's as strong.

Paramount is releasing its own special edition of Ragtime as part of the Paramount Presents line on Nov. 16. It will include the theatrical cut mastered in 4K and a workprint copy of Forman's longer Director's Cut.
