What's Criterion's licensing history with Paramount titles? I'd LOVE for their next Lynch release to be The Elephant Man.

First I've heard about it being a permanent part of the film, but I think it's true. In the open matte VHS there was additional blurring done in a different way, so I think it's always been in the film prints and not a change for home video. In which case I'm okay with it.

[spoiler]As mentioned, it should not be visible with proper brightness settings.
When I was watching the DVD on my SD CRT set I would have to turn down the brightness and contrast way down in order to make the modesty blur disappear.

And I mean way down, to the point where the 5 o'clock news looked like it was lit by candlelight.

But on my HD set, the blur is invisible under my normal calibration.

I love The Sword of Doom! However, I'm a little disappointed this Blu-ray release doesn't get an upgrade on the sparse supplements of the DVD. I'll still buy it, because: 1) I'm a sucker and 2) it has gorgeous black and white cinematography that should look outstanding in hi-def.

meh.

I'm happy with my Sword of Doom DVD, and the rest of that lineup does nothing for me.

In for The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant and possibly The Palm Beach Story as a blind buy.

The Sword of Doom is one of my favorite samurai flicks, I'd be happy to double dip during next July's B&N sale.

I'm definitely double dipping for Sword of Doom. One of my favourite samurai movie and the ending is absolutely "nuts".

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant

Have not seen La Cineaga (the dvd was put out by Home Vision) but I might give it a blind buy.
The only film by Lucrecia Martel that I have seen is The Headless Woman and that one is really good.

Sword of Doom and the Sturges for me, might pick up the Argentine film too.

As for the news about Erice in 2015, that better be Spirit of the Beehive.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

'La Cienga' is an amazing film. Like Headless Woman, action is very subtle and below the surface of the banal (actually seemingly nonexistent). It's also a critique of the bourgeoisie. It culminates in a shocking and disturbing finale. So, if you are into that stuff...

I am also a fan of 'My Winnepeg.' For a long time it was a Blockbuster Exclusive rental and that was it! So nice to see Criterion finally release it with their terrific extras. But Maddin is also for the acquired taste (he does have a kinship to Lynch, though).

Great film IMO. Watch the dvd now and decide if you want to upgrade.

I just passed up a cheap used copy the other day because I thought it was in that Rebel Samurai box. I should have checked, I had my mobile with me and everything.

(I did end up with Kagemusha, Red Beard and Great Expectations for about $30+ tax total).

Inland Empire was shot on standard-def video. And not even good standard-def video. Absolute garbage, bottom-of-the-barrel DV. The movie probably could have looked better had Lynch shot it with a 1980s VHS camcorder.

There's no point to putting Inland Empire on Blu-ray. An upconverted Blu-ray was released in the UK and of course it looks atrocious.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Oh, I'm fully aware of how terrible Inland Empire looks. Doesn't the UK Blu-ray have lossless audio, though? That would be the only reason to even consider an upgrade, or a Region A release.

The reason I said I bet it would be the next Lynch title from CC is because, like Eraserhead, Lynch owns it himself, so maybe a deal was struck for that title, too.

Not likely... but possible.

I don't have anything to back it up, but I have read speculation that some rights are held by producer Edward R. Pressman (the movie was independently produced and then picked up by WB). WB may still have some rights as well but Pressman may have enough ownership interest to get it licensed out.

I very much doubt that digital blurring was stipulated in her contract. The best explanation I could find on the internet was on this site :

For the DVD release Lynch added digital blurring to Laura Harring's nude scene where Rita unrobes and gets into bed with the Betty character. Lynch stated in the chatroom on dl.com: "We did that blurring for the DVD on purpose as we knew that pictures of Laura would be everywhere if we didn't. And later he added, "First - if the shot is timed correctly you should not be able to tell one bit if Laura's pubic hair has been blurred - this probably means some viewers are experimenting to see Laura's pubic hair and more... This is why the picture was blurred - I promised Laura that I would try to protect her as much as possible and told her she would remain a beautiful silhouette against the warm light coming in through the curtains."

Based on the dvdbeaver comparison I agree. I'll just hold on to my Rhino dvd.
Love the movie but it seems that there is no way to improve the picture quality.
