I understand the OAR issue. In some shots it feels compressed for sure but overall looks fine from what I've seen. Still irks me though...changing an OAR.

The challenge with aspect ratios with Kubrick's later pictures is that he used multiple ratios within a film, so you almost have to go scene by scene.

The major issue with The Shining is that it doesn't offer the European cut of the film. (European cut is actually shorter.) From what I understand, this was Kubrick's preferred cut of the film.

As for Criterion, I have strong doubts that Warners would license this out. I will say, that it's somewhat likely Criterion will release the Room 237 documentary. If so, they are going to have to clear the rights to all the clips from The Shining, so maybe they could convince Warners to let the have it under the condition that it's part of a box with Room 237. There is some precedent for this, see: North by Northwest in the Universal Hitchcock set or the Warner Kazan titles in the Fox set. Still a pipe dream at most.

The OAR of The Shining is 1.85:1. That is indisputable at this point. Here is one of Kubrick's storyboards for the movie:

Notice the notes on the right.

"THE FRAME IS EXACTLY 1-1:85.
Obviously you compose for that
but protect the full 1-1:33 area."

That should put the argument to rest for all time.

I'm currently reading The Tin Drum and it's a great read (Nobel winner and all that), but how in the heck does it translate to a movie? Not quite finished, so don't spoil the ending or anything, but is it even worth watching?

I haven't read the book, but I abhor The Tin Drum (the movie). It's solidly executed for what it is, but pretentious, twee, preachy and self-important beyond imagination. It's a brutally awful movie, IMO.

I think this is one of those cases where knowing how the book was would help with that. The book is gleefully "self-important", but the tone clues you into that on the first page and from then on you're there for the ride.

I'll try to give the movie a watch then.

Nope. The documentary was picked up by IFC Films at Sundance last year. Obviously I haven't seen it, since it has only screened at festivals so far.

I was just suggesting that if Criterion were to license one of Kubrick's Warner titles it would probably be the Shining. Even if Room 237 isn't an essential documentary, if I was working at Criterion I would ask Warner for the rights to release both films together in a slipcase. There is some precedent for this with the inclusion of North by Northwest in Universal's Hitchcock set or the Warner Kazan titles in the Fox Elia Kazan box. I don't see it happening but that would be a more likely scenario than Warner handing out the rights to any of his other films. Since Room 237 is loaded with clips from The Shining, I'm sure someone had/has to clear the rights to all that footage.. While we're wildly speculating, as I stated earlier, the Warner releases have never included Kubrick's preferred European cut of the film, maybe Criterion could work out a deal for that particular cut in a set with Room 237. as TheDuke mentioned, they've made at least 2 Shining related twitter posts in the last 3 weeks.
