re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Anyone seen an increase of sales on 'The Third Man' because of the OOP title? I'm at the point where I dont care as much as I did in the past about titles going Out of Print -- Just means something nicer is on the way.

But it is a quick buck.

Well, the Blu-ray is up to #25 on Amazon. I ordered a second copy to resell later.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Is anyone else waiting for Seven Samurai to be announced?

It seems like it would be an obvious choice for Blu-ray. It's one of the great films of world cinema, it was Criterion's very first DVD, and it's been one of their most popular titles.

I'm pretty sure it was #2, #1 was Grand Illusion.

actually, Grand Illisiun is spine #1, but it wasn't released for about a year after they started releasing DVDs. so SS was probably first.

I think SS is probably their biggest seller.

I bought the 3-disc Seven Samurai 2 weeks ago. I'm expecting a blu-ray announcement any day now...

I'd LOL if this winds up being OOP on the original case only and the keepcase version comes out right behind it.

I suspect that Criterion may need to remaster Seven Samurai again to do away with the obnoxious windowboxing on their last DVD.

But, The Third Man didn't have windowboxing. Or was it a new master?

This is starting to go the way of Youtube commenting banter.

Criterion numbers films according to when they go into production, not when they come out. Grand Illusion was #1, but it took a really long time to finish, so Samurai did come out first.

I think they just un-window boxed it.

I still wish they started the numbers over. It's not like we are going to see some of those OOP dvds ever released on Blu-ray and I doubt they'll reassign those numbers to new films.

Criterion "adds" windowboxing in the process of downsampling their HD transfers to NTSC.

I'm surprised how fast this one was completely OOP. Seems like it's out of stock at pretty much any venue, and already up to ≈$38-40 on amazon marketplace.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I was at the Dr. Paranassus premiere last night, and got to talk to terrygilliam, he stayed around and spent a good amount of time talking to everyone who wanted to say hi.
He mentioned that he is working on some new special features for a bluray release of Brazil.
he didnt mention what type of time frame but said he was working on some, i had told him how i thought the criterion 3 disc standard dvd set was one of the finest dvd releases ever made when i asked him to sign it. (one of the few dvds i still own)

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Its amazing, definately one of the top 5 films of the year.
Heath ledger was great not to mention the way gilliam utalizes colin ferrell johnny depp and jude law to take over for him. Verne Troyer shows a range of acting i would not have thought possible before.
hands down though the best performance of the movie is Christopher Plummer. what was really cool was durring the speech before the screening last night Terry gilliam addressed Christopher plummer directly and mentioning the fact that this was the first time christopher plummer was going to see the movie.
