Would you have them just say, "Well, it's already on DVD- just buy that"? A double-dip is an attempt to cash in on a title that's already been released on the same video format. It's a failing because, the thinking goes, it should've been handled "correctly" the first time it was released on the format. The previous times the movies you cite were released, Blu-ray didn't yet exist.

I'm just using "double-dip" as shorthand for "purchasing on Blu-ray a film I already own on DVD".

I believe the shorthand is "upgrade." ;)

the Naked cover looks like they wanted it to sell as a comedy... didn't like Topsy turvy's cover either, too cartoony when the movie is full of so many sets/costumes and real life stuff, and they put an ugly caricature.

Then for a movie like the music room, they went really vague. another movie in a great location and the cover doesn't show it.

I like the covers better that show some of the actual movie. like the red shoes / black narcissusu, or paths of glory
the High and Low art is one of the best I've seen from criterion.
why should we really care about the covers? I dont know. for some reason i do.

Anyone going into Leon Morin expecting a typical Melville crime film will be disappointed - if anything, it's more along the lines of Le Silence de la mer. It's Bressonian in it's austerity, but full of the intellectual debate and probing of a Godard film. Belmondo, restrained and somber, gives one of his finest performances. I wonder if the Vincendeau visual essay will be different from her partial commentary on the BFI disc.

Le Silence de la mer is likely my favourite Melville so that's great to hear.

This is completely appropriate, IMHO. All 'double dip' means in DVD/Blu-ray speak is buying a new copy of a movie you already own.

No one should feel a need to bring a negative viewpoint to the use of the word. If others do, that's an individual choice and not reflective of how everyone uses the term. Any Blu-ray release of a film previously owned on DVD is a double dip and an upgrade for me. Those two terms feel interchangeable.

High And Low & Beauty And The Beast are Day 1 for me... I'll have to rent the Melville first.

I know Brand Upon The Brain! is already in the collection, but perhaps this video is a hint that some more of his work will be making an appearance...

Nope. From the Criterion Forum:

I sent the following email to Guy:
Criterion just posted that you were picking out dvds in their gift closet. Does this mean that either My Winnipeg or The Saddest Music in the World is currently being worked on? They usually post these videos as sort of a teaser of a forthcoming release (I'm hoping for both films)

His response:
Alas, it means nothing. I was just visiting the offices and they let all visitors into the closet. I got greedy.

In this instance, "the Kurosawa and Melville double-dips" was referenced. The readership of this thread not being intimately familiar with NoirFan's personal DVD collection, the post implied a description of Criterion's release pattern, rather than NoirFan's buying habits.

... but I digress.

A great film. Hopefully the Bergman film The Image Makers, included on the Tartan disc of Phantom Carriage, will be an extra.

Criterion posted a bunch of original Throne of Blood publicity stills on facebook. Did they already hint at a Throne of Blood Blu-ray release?

Nothing's been outright stated so far. I wouldn't be opposed to more Kurosawa on Blu.

Me either. I'd want them all, but first I want Stray Dog and The Hidden Fortress.
