Re: 1st 100% Region Free Blu-Ray Player

it's currently being discussed in the international forum since it can play other region BD/DVDs. Currently for sale for $349.99 at HKFlix.

And about the same price as Toshiba's POS E500 thingie, isn't it.

Looks like Oppo is slacking behind.

It still requires a manual hack. Not a huge deal but no different from the LG BH200 player.

Re: 1st 100% Region Free Blu-Ray Player

it also looks like when you want to play different region discs, you have to enter a region code each time. Doesn't look like there's one hack to disable to make it region-fee. Odd and a bit of a pain I guess, but at least it can play different region discs.

Last I read, their BD player isn't even region hackable for DVD.

This is awesome. I would jump on this if I could afford imports from places other that the UK.

I know a lot of people are defending Oppo and I understand why they can't make their player region hackable, but Oppo is delusional if they think they're going to sell a ton of those BD players on the merits of its BD playing alone. I would bet good money more than 1/2 of those who own an Oppo DVD Player bought one primarily because of its region-free capabilities.

I would have jumped on the Oppo BD player right away, but with both a PS3 and a BD30 in my rack (as well as an Oppo DVD player which can handle DVD-Audio and region-free DVD), there's just no reason for me to shell out for their player if I can't play other region discs in it.

Not to get off on a tangent, but I don't think OPPO is that interested in selling large quantities of any of their products. If that were true, you'd see them in big box retailers. I think people buy OPPO products because of the features, great upscaling quality, second-to-none customer service, AND because they are region-free.

I should have been clearer - I don't think they'll sell quantities of the BD player comparable to the quantities they've sold of their DVD players. Hopefully it will still be a profitable endeavor for them.

If I didn't own a PS3 or BD30 I would definitely get it, but right now I have an Oppo and an XA2 for good upconversion, and BD30 and PS3 for BD, so their player would have to really kick the shit out of the PS3 and Panny for me to consider it just for BD.

Re: 1st 100% Region Free Blu-Ray Player

I'm still trying to get through many of my Region A BD titles, but this would make a great secondary player. I'll patiently continue to wait for a cheap BD player to surface down the road that can be easily purchased at a BB and hacked.

Are you sure? It doesn't look the Sigmatek 1000 I've seen on various web sites.

It isn't. Even worse, their BD player is replacing the brilliant DV-983H which was hackable but is now discontinued.

Oppo is the first company in a long long time I've come across who actually wants to go out of business voluntarily.

Same codes to make them region free, same remote control, I read somewhere they both have a Samsung base.

They might argue that they would actually go out of business if they didn't comply with the BDA's requirements.

Oppo's in a tight spot because they cater to enthusiasts, and the market for enthusiasts is starting to change from DVD to Blu-ray. They could just go on making region-free hackable DVD players but eventually that business will dry up. So they have to put out a BD player, but can't risk the license being revoked. Damned if you do....etc.

I think the best case scenario is, they release their player, the user base figures out how to hack it for region-free DVD and/or BD. This way Oppo still sells players, and users get what they want.

That would be ideal, bunkaroo. And if it does happen, I'll jump on the Oppo BD player. But not a moment sooner.

Re: 1st 100% Region Free Blu-Ray Player

You don't have to punch in a code each time for DVD; but simply leave it set for Region 0. For Blu-rays, you have to use the code, but it is very simple, you don't even have to go into a menu, just type the number and hit the enter button.

Most US users could leave it at the default setting (Region 0 DVD/ Region A Blu-ray) most of the time.

if I followed correctly, there's now 2 discussions in the thread, one about the momitsu / Sigmatek which is the region free BD/DVD player and one about the oppo which will not be

Well, why doesn't Oppo do what it's always done. Make a player which is "made" to play in Regions A, B, and C. At the software level, Oppo just "switches" which region the player will be, depending on the country--shouldn't violate any BDA rules so far.

Then, after the player is released for a month or two, people find out what switch to flip or numbers to push, in order to play any region Blu-ray disc.

But I'm certainly not going to be the guinea pig and buy an Oppo player, hoping this happens.

Re: 1st 100% Region Free Blu-Ray Player

I also have a ps3, a panasonic 30, and an oppo dvd player. I see no reason to upgrade to the oppo bluray player either.
