As I mentioned in the other thread, all of Criterion's extras are included except "Introduction to the Supplements by Spike Lee", "Back to Bed-Stuy" (about 5m), "Lee's Final Word" (about 6m), "Fight the Power" music video (long version, about 7m) with Lee intro, and the booklet, plus the new extras by Universal. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Nice - I'll be grabbing this but I will hold on to my Criterion DVD!

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
The whole point of the movie, I think, is that no one does the right thing.
|
Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Lee had some balls to portray African-Americans the way he did. If you think the worst in people then Mookie did the right thing.

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Does anybody both have the current Universal SD and Criterion SD? I hope this isn't going to be another Spartacus transfer-wise.
|
Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
I heard the original Universal looked crappy.
|
Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
I doubt Universal would bother to pack it full of extras only to give it a crappy transfer. The Spartacus HD DVD had none of the Criterion supplements.

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Universal remastered Do the Right Thing anamorphically for their "Spike Lee Joint Collection" that had Clockers, Jungle Fever, Mo Better Blues and Crooklyn. That's the most recent SD transfer I know of, but the stand-alone release is extremely old and non-anamorphic, so if anyone remembers the Universal disc looking bad, this might be why.

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
OK, I'm willing to chance that this transfer will be an improvement (though I shudder at the prospect of some ugly cover-art), so if anyone wants a mint condition Criterion "DO THE RIGHT THING" for $18 shipped anywhere in the US, shoot me a PM!

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
I'm so looking forward to this. I have the Criterion DVD set and have been thinking about watching it lately. It's been awhile since it went for a spin in my player, but I think I'll wait for this new Blu-Ray to hit instead.
I seem to always remember the red wall behind the old guys bleeding over a lot on the DVD (could be my imagination) but I'm sure the Blu-Ray will improve on that. |
Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Blu-ray.com has posted their review.

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Looks great. This is one of my top films of all time, so I'll be happy to upgrade to the Blu-Ray (while hanging onto my Criterion standard in the process).

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
The new BluRay completely washes away the very intentional yellow/orange tint of the film. Making it look completely ugly, because ya know...the film was shot with the tint in mind.
Um...it takes place a very hot day...hello? KEEP YOUR CRITERION! |
Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Yeah I thought the same thing when I saw the comparisons of DVD Beaver. The Criterion DVD was approved by the cinematographer so I would assume that is the correct look for the film. I'm bummed about this one.

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
It looks like there's some edge enhancement too.
|
Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Very disappointing news. One of my faves ruined.
|
Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Yeah, on further review, I think I'm going to pass. Looking at the new transfer, it just doesn't feel 'hot' anymore and that's a huge part of that story.

Re: Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition ---> 6/30/09
Jesus Christ. Unbelievable. Those comparison screenshots really speak a thousand words.
I don't understand how, after... what, 12 years now?... in the DVD and Blu-Ray business, companies are still screwing up color timing of movies. It seems like every time a "classic" gets cleaned up and re-released they screw it up (see: Halloween). It boggles my mind. I will probably still buy it so that I can enjoy the HD clarity but I'll keep my Criterion. |
