Not Another Help Me Buy My First BR DVD

Hey guys, I finally made the jump to Blue-Ray DVD. I just upgraded from an Insignia CRT HDTV to a Sony - BRAVIA 40" 1080p 120Hz Flat-Panel LCD HDTV Model KDL-40W4100. My Blue-Ray player is a Sony model BDP-S350.

Now, I need to buy/rent some BD's. What should I get first to display l all the HD goodness? Please recommend a recent release that looks great in HD.

Re: Not Another Help Me Buy My First BR DVD

It's actually Blu-ray Disc.

I don't know that it matters much. Don't get too hung up on it, because eventually you'll have a variety of movies that have different looks. If you want something really good, I'd recommend anything Pixar (or most other cg animation, really). For live-action, I'd suggest I, Robot and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (especially the sequels). There are others, but I'll leave them to fellow forum members to mention.

If your looking for best quality movies: Godfather Trilogy, Pixar, Casablanca

If your looking for the most awe-inspiring visuals (not to say the previous don't look great): Transformers, I, Robot, Pixar, PLANET EARTH!

Thank you for all the suggestions. It looks like I'll be buying some Pixar and Iron Man for sure. I hadn't thought about older films like Casablanca, but now I can't wait to see it in HD.

Classics in hi-def are my favorite thing about Blu-ray. 2001, Blade Runner, Bonnie & Clyde, The Shining, The Searchers, and How the West Was Won are just a few that are killer.

Planet Earth looks great. The Fall looks absolutley amazing, trust me on this one.
Wall-E, Rambo, The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight, Live Free or Die hard. There are so many.

If you're into sports videos at all, there is one called That's it, That's all with Travis Rice, it's a snowboarding video and it looks ABSOLUTLEY stunning, I would suggest that over anything else for the picture, soundtrack, audio quality. It's quite awesome.

First things first: Make sure you turn off the 120 Hz function.

I would give the exact opposite advice. First, I'm not even sure you can get the Discovery Channel version of "Planet Earth" on Blu-ray, but the two versions are from the same source. But with the Discovery Channel version, several minutes have been cut out of each episode and the narration is different.

The picture quality of "Planet Earth" can be inconsistent because of shooting conditions, but overall it's a must-own title on Blu-ray.

...says the person who's first recommendation was The Dark Knight?

That Blu-ray has been slammed but everyone except the Fan boys.

Ha! I should have said "The Dark Knight (IMAX)". The 35mm scenes didn't look that great but the 65mm IMAX scenes looked incredible.

Sign up for Netflix and decide for yourself. There are some re-releases that are quite stunning depending on your taste (e.g. the new Sleeping Beauty is just amazing). If you like the quality, then go out and buy it when you see it for a decent price.

Really. I was told this was a must for movies or sports with a lot of movement. Thanks for the tip.

I saw some display videos running yesterday. King Kong and Kung Fu Panda looked awesome. I'll definitely pick up Planet Earth based on several suggestions. Thank you again for all of your help.

I hate double-dipping, but I may have to on some of the titles I already own on standard dvd.

Everyone? Really? Here's a sampling of the video scores for the Dark Knight from reviews at various sites:

DVD Talk - 5/5
Blu-ray.com - 5/5
Hi-Def Digest - 4.5/5
DVDBeaver - 9/10

Can you point me to multiple legitimate reviewers that "slammed" the video.

P.S. A maniacal thread on AVS doesn't count.

I think the reason TDK was so bad, was so that WB has a reason to double dip.
