Unfortunately no technical explanation will satisfy some people who believe that every pixel is supposed to be filled with the piece of an image.

This will be an ongoing issue with a lot of HDTV owners. There is the apect of films coupled with the numerous aspect settings on your HDTV or CRT TV as well as the settings on your DVD player.

When you throw in the differences between 4:3 P&S, 4:3 letterbox (non-anamorphic), 16:9 anamorphic and the occasional 4:3 recorded anamorphic image, it can get really confusing.
