While I'm sure they're working on the Blu-Rays as well, I meant the DVD restorations.

Actually, now that I see the details, I am not as excited. To me, the only new feature that peaks my interest is the extended making of Alien3 doc. Is that enough to spend this much money for the upgrade? The SD PQ was pretty good...unless the BD PQ is substantially better, I may sit this one out.

Thanks I have been looking for this info off an on for like 3 days. Defiantly interested in seeing the original Wreckage and Rage Docu and the infamous "Burke Cocooned" scene.

But I think I will wait until they release it with all the Predator movies like the Best Buy set did.

I doubt that's going to happen. They did that to promote AvP: R and I don't see any more AvPs on the horizon, particularly now that Predator and potentially Alien will be revived as individual franchises.

I clicked on the link to order the Egg packaging and have 3 observations:
1) They are now offering an Alien Poster with the Egg;
2) They are claiming the 10% discount is included within the $150 price. It isn't since I ordered quickly enough to get 10% of the $150 price. They eliminated that discount pretty quickly;
3) and finally, an edition of 5000 doesn't seem like all the many. I'm surprised it's not already sold out. But then I've never following the history of special packaging and maybe this is a big release, for all I know.

This showed up in my Gold Box at $93...and I cracked. I can always cancel later if Best Buy or some other place has a better advertised price on release day.

I can't believe this will have the entire Alien 3 documentary. Confirmed purchase, not that it was a debate anyway.

October is going to be ridiculous for me. I mean October 5th alone has nearly 10 titles I want. Not to mention that both Alien AND Back to the Future come out on the same fucking day! BTTF is a done deal I'm buying it the day it comes out and I will more than likely be picking up Alien as well, as long as I have the money. I can't wait for Black Friday since I have a job that I will be working at ALL freaking day that day so that's no good, unless I buy it on Amazon or something the day before like they did last year. Either way, even if I knew I had that day off I still wouldn't wait, I love buying these things when they first come out! ;)

Nevermind. The blu-ray set of Star Wars isn't going to have the real versions of the movies. Only the fiddled with, stupid, ruined crapfest asshat versions.

Fuuuuuuuuck!

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=68820

Interviewer: Do you have anything to do with the new Aliens stuff they are putting out?

Cameron: I just did a complete remaster of Aliens personally, uh, with the same colorist I worked with from Avatar and it's spectacular. We went in and completely denoised and degrained it, up-rezzed it, color corrected it from end to end, every frame and it looks amazing. It looks better than it did in theaters, originally, because it was shot on a high speed negative, a new negative that didn't pan out too well and got replaced the following year so it was pretty grainy...we got rid of all the grain and it's sharper and clearer and more beautiful than it's ever looked and we did that to the long version.

Wonderful. :( Still hope for Alien, I suppose, but they'll likely want "consistency" for the rest of the discs.

You said you can't wait to see what "they" do with Star Wars. Remember that the Alien set is being produced by Fox, while Star Wars is really coming from Lucasfilm (controlled of course by George Lucas). Fox is not to blame for the decisions on SW, even though they're distributing the discs.

My initial reaction to the Cameron news is WTF!?, but I'll reserve judgment until it's out. I hope he at least did a careful job with it, and hopefully he's exaggerating when he says that "all" of the grain was removed. I just don't see Cameron as the type to do a wax job on a movie. It won't be the same, but if he really wants it that way, I guess he's entitled to do it. :shrug:

(Honestly though, I really just like the first Alien film and I hope that one got a great treatment. But, I feel for those who love Aliens as it's a very popular film.)

A little concerning but I'm not going to freak out or anything. Sounds like he's giving a very simplified answer, he's not exactly talking to American Cinematographer here.

Well, Alien is not a particularly noisy movie to begin with. Scott shot it with those luscious anamorphic lenses and I've seen it in 35. Not too much grain going on, certainly not like in Aliens, where it's meant to look gritty.

Besides, all four Alien movies look completely different. I don't see why there would be a mandate to suddenly make them look consistent.

I'm going to reserve judgment on this. I've seen Aliens in 35mm and 70mm, and it's a damn grainy movie. We'll see how it looks on Blu-ray. At least we know Cameron has supervised this. That being said, I'm still holding on to my Quadrilogy set anyway (in case I want to watch the movies in a place that doesn't offer Blu-ray), so worst case scenario I watch Aliens on DVD.

Plus, as I mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I have faith that Lauzirika and the team at Lowry instructed Cameron on how to get the clarity he wanted without actually ruining his film. The guy told us it wasn't going to be another Predator, and I trust him.

Yeah, Lauzirika's got my trust.

I'll reserve judgment also until I see reviews/screencaps. It is a bit disappointing to hear this, but if Cameron wants to change the look of his movie I can't stop him. Whether I will want to own it or not is another matter.

I hope you're right, and that Fox doesn't decide to do something similar to the color-timing change for the Matrix trilogy -- which, I know, was a filmmaker choice. But you are correct in that Alien isn't a particularly grainy film to begin with, so there's that little glimmer of hope. Even still, Mr. Avatar's wording about "completely de-noising and de-graining" a film, after seeing what happened with the "all-new digital restoration" for Predator (also under Fox's banner), still isn't comforting. I'm leery, but I'll try to be optimistic until release.

I think Cameron's definition of "de-noising" and "de-graining" the new high def master is probably a bit different than what's been handed to us in the past on so many other movies.

What pissed me off more was his dismissal of re-visiting True Lies on Blu. I'm starting to think we won't see that one for a very long time.

Fox very rarely sends out review discs before release date (sometimes a day or two before).

5:35 in. Interviewer asks if Cameron is interested in "revisiting" True Lies - "doing some blu ray stuff?" Cameron shows no enthusiasm about it whatsoever, only replies "Yeah, maybe."

just watched that video....didn't like the way he explained definitive cuts and whatnot...hrm...

damn...his enthusiasm for True Lies seemed like annoyance....

back on Aliens...he said they only did the work on the "Director's Cut" of the film...
