This is the only thing I've seen so far. Havn't really been paying attention if it was official or not.

Thanks for the link. Looks like they're backing off on the controversial plastic case that the HD came in. I know a lot of people hated it, but I didn't mind it. That will be great if season 2 and 3 follow through on Blu by the end of the year. Too bad they're not widescreen seeing how the show was shot on film, but I'm sure there's a good reason.

Just because something was shot on film does not mean it was COMPOSED for a widescreen aspect ratio....besides, 35mm film does have roughly a 4:3 negative size, you do know they just matte theatrical films to about 1.85, right?

Sure, you could possibly take the pre-existing negatives, and maybe go shot by shot, scene by scene through each episode to create an aesthetically pleasing 16:9 version that doesn't lose anything important visually in the frame....however, the show was filmed and originally composed for the 4:3 aspect ratio, and I would personally prefer to see the WHOLE picture as intended, not a new, 21st century version of the evil pan & scan cropping....

The big news in this article, to me, is that the Blu-ray sets will include the original versions of the episodes in HD, as well as the retooled versions with the new CG special effects. I'll rebuy the first season if this is true.

Um. . . thanks for the lesson on composition, mattes and film ratios. I'm glad you brought me up to speed on this subject.

so i was just browsing through my preorders on amazon and i was plesantly surprised to see that the start trek motion picture collection on bluray is now at 79.99
breaks down to about 13 bucks a movie, considering its been hovering between 93 and 97 for most of the time since its been announced this is a great price. here is hopeing it drops even more before release day.

Honestly, the only Trek movie I've been able to get into is Wrath Of Khan. I'll wait until a "definitive" version of the film (as Skoobooz stated, seamless branching for both versions, all existing special features along with new ones, etc.) is available separately...

Yeah i just can not bring myself to wait for the box set for all 11 films.
besides they have allready begun pre production on trek XII and Trek XI is not even in theatres yet.(though iam excited that my friend in L.A. has invited me to special advanced screening taking place next week)
how can you beat 13 dollars a movie on blu when you by the box set

There are some Trek films I must have bought at least 3 times in various formats (and would you believe I have all of DS9 on VHS AND DVD...yes, madness), so the longer I wait the better.

I do really like the directors cut but its going to be a while before we get the directors cut of Kahn just because of the way all the optical effect were done for the directors cut included scenes. in the meantime we atleast get a remasterd highdef trek for a decent price.

I'd really like to pick this set up but since I already own all of these movies (plus Generations and First Contact) on dvd I think I'll pass for now. I'd rather get a box set of the 11 films or even just the original movies plus The Next Generation movies. Besides I'll have TOS season 1 on blu-ray to tide me over for a while.

do you have to watch the series before the films? I'm really interested in watching the films for the first time, but without ever seeing a single episode, will I be really lost?

I saw episodes of TOS on TV, but I wasn't a big fan. I became a fan through the movies and then went back and watched the series. If you want, all of TOS is available for free on CBS.com. I highly recommend watching at least season 1.

Nah, not really. I mean it's best if you at least have a general idea of who the characters are and what the show's about, but they did a good job of making the movies newb-friendly. Or at least with 2-6 they did, the first movie was obviously geared more toward hardcore fans, what with all the slow, lingering, semi-erotic exterior shots of the Enterprise. You can actually just skip the 1st movie though, it doesn't have any impact on the continuity of the movies, although I do kinda like it.

No, but I would greatly recommend watching the 1st season episode "Space Seed" before watching The Wrath Of Khan (the second movie), as that is the only film which serves as a direct "sequel" to events on the TV show (and specifically that episode).....

Yup. If I can sell my HD DVD set for a decent price I MIGHT consider this as a purchase.

I wanted note that not only is Best Buy selling the TOS 1st season for $64.99, but they are also selling the movie set for $99.99. If you order both from bestbuy.com, they'll give you a $15 discount.
