re: The Exorcist 40th Anniversary (Blu-ray) - 10/8/13

It would please me to no end if Warner would include, as I had hoped they would have done on the first Blu-ray release, the true original theatrical cut, which hasn't seen a home video release since the very first DVD of The Exorcist came out in 1997. Every time they're released it since then, it's been either the 25th Anniversary Edition, which includes a few digital "fixes" of things that didn't need fixing in the first place, or the "Version You've Never Seen," which, for the most part, should have remained unseen.

While I'm at it, I'd love to see the original WB logo that preceded the film reinstated for this release. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it seems to just fit the tone of the film so much better than the blue sky logo that that's been used on recent releases.

I'm not budging yet. Even with a new transfer and the two new special features, I'm not ready to double dip. I'll stick with my digibook for now.

Got the digibook last year on sale at Best Buy. i think I got it for $9.99. I'm happy with that. Already has enough extras.

And Friedkin and author Blatty will attend a special 40th Anniversary screening of their film at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. on October 30. The film will also have an exclusive theatrical engagement October 31 through November 7th at the AMC Georgetown.

The press release mentions new supplements but doesn't say anything about a new transfer. The existing Blu-ray was supervised and approved by both William Friedkin and (more importantly) cinematographer Owen Roizman.

There's talk in the comments on that page that this disc will come from a 4k scan, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a new 4k scan. The last Blu-ray may have already been from a 4k transfer at that time.

Knowing Warner's history, the studio doesn't like to spend money on remastering titles if it doesn't think it has to.

I don't have a link, but I thought I read an interview or something with Friedkin where he was talking about the new 4k scan and how great it looked. Granted, the issues with The French Connection really strained Friedkin's credibility with a lot of people (myself included), but my guess is that he'd know if a new scan was done or not. Of course just because a new scan was done doesn't mean WB will use it (see: A Clockwork Orange).

I remember that, but as I recall, it wasn't clear from his comments whether by "new scan" he was actually referring to the existing Blu-ray transfer (which was new at the time he made it).

In countless other interviews, Friedkin has demonstrated that he's not very knowledgable about technical matters, especially concerning home video.

I'm still freaking the fuck out about Sorcerer. His comments on the new transfer scare me. I'm sad that I never got the old DB of The Exorcist.

I'll reserve judgment until it comes out. Friedkin also made comments that he planned to give The Exorcist the same horrid "pastel" treatment as The French Connection, but the eventual Blu-ray has none of that. Owen Roizman held Friedkin's feet to the fire and made sure the Blu-ray was transferred correctly. Friedkin eventually relented and let The French Connection be remastered properly too. I think he may have learned his lesson after the backlash against his "pastel" experiment.

Then again, maybe not. We'll see.

The overwhelming blue tint in the third act is revisionist color grading.

I like that photo- VERY low key.

I just think it's telling that they chose to tint it blue.

That's the kind of artwork a Criterion EXORCIST would have.
Though this is what, the fourth or fifth release of the movie?
Could be a lot worse.

I have admittedly not seen the movie in a number of years, but I don't even remember the significance of those steps... Is that by the church they go to at the beginning of the movie? It does seem rather Criterion-esque, but I've always loved the classic poster artwork.

Great cover, but I highly doubt this'll get me to upgrade my digibook.

The steps are of huge significance in the movie & a tourist attraction to this day. Are you sure you've ever even seen this movie?

That's a nice cover... definitely Criterion-like (except for the huge banner).

Yes, haha. Like I said, it was years ago... when I was a freshman in high school, to be exact. I just recently graduated college, so yeah. I wasn't terribly impressed with it, which coupled with my age is probably why I don't remember the significant, but my tastes weren't exactly mature then. If this set gets good enough reviews I'll probably pick it up. I'm sure it's popular for a reason.
