take a moment to mark the closing later tonight of Captain Jakes Amity Boat Tours, (JAWS:The Ride)
at my second home Universal Studios Orlando
Some of the best years of my life were as a skipper saving tourists from that bad ol shark JAWS.

heres hoping though probably unlikely there is something, be it the queue line videos or footage of the ride enviorment as a special feature on the upcomming bluray.

Still cant believe that JAWS is being replaced by an expansion of themed area based on a movie that isnt even a universal studios release.
Thank goodness I finally got to Universal for the first time this past spring and rode that ride twice. It was my favorite. I was bummed out that the King Kong ride was no longer as I always dreamed of riding it. I was also expecting more on the Universal monsters at the park and there was just that crappy cover band with Beetlejuice. Even the classic monsters restaurant was closed for remodeling. Still, loved the Jaws ride.

I'll upgrade primarily because I was never that impressed with the DVD release. Love the part in the movie where they smoke in the hospital

There's a reason there have been Jurassic Park box sets when there has never been a Jaws box set: Spielberg directed one JP sequel and produced the other. He had nothing to do with the Jaws sequels.

Universal is free to release the Jaws sequels but they can't release them alongside the original without Spielberg's approval. And why would he approve that?

A similar situation is likely the reason why Universal has ever done a 4-film Psycho set.

It also helps that the Jurassic Park sequels, while flawed, are still fun and entertaining movies. I don't think the Jaws sequels can claim the same.

I would like to see Jaws 3 in 3D again for shits and giggles. It would have to be modern 3D and not anaglyph though.

Come on now, no matter how flawed they are both Jaws 3-D and Jaws the revenge are fun movies even if its for the pure cheese factor.

To a few, I'm sure. Difference being to the vast majority of consumers there is a single Jaws movie and three Jurassic Park movies.

I've never seen a quote from Spielberg that flat-out states "I've blocked the release of Jaws box sets" but his control/approval of his films on home video is well-known and the fact that his "Jaws" film has NEVER appeared alongside a sequel on home video speaks for itself.

Universal does what Spielberg wants and for years "Jurassic Park" has been a franchise and "Jaws" has been a standalone event film with bargain-bin sequels.

Re: Jaws - 8/14/12

Jaws is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 19. Here's a bit of info regarding the BD from the Tribeca website:

Later this year, fans can own Jaws for the first time ever on Blu-ray featuring an all-new, fully restored and digitally remastered picture from original 35mm film elements. Fans of John Williams' iconic score will also love the Blu-ray's DTS-HD Master 7.1 sound, which optimizes the film for the home screening environment.

Re: Jaws - 8/14/12

Well, I didn't like the 5.1 track on the DVD, so 7.1 probably isn't going to be any better. Hopefully the mono track is also in lossless.

I'm betting it's remastered to address the issues in the first release

Remastered or not, the problem is that they (apparently) just don't have the original stems to create a real remix. So, they had to use newly-created sounds. I suppose they could improve it though.

Re: Jaws - 8/14/12

No mono, no sale for me. And I'll wait to see the reviews and read the chatter on line. I've owned the CAV Laserdisc of Jaws and both DVD's and while each release was better than the last it has always been a film with a VERY noisy transfer and even the most recent release was filled with noise and artifacts. I just don't think a good transer is possible. We'll see.

That being said I fucking love jaws. I might have to watch it tonight.

Interesting extra from the upcoming blu-ray on the restoration of Jaws:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hLWvXaeDzwU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

According to blu-ray.com:

In addition to Universal's standard BD-Live, pocket BLU, Advanced Remote Control, Video Timeline, Mobile-To-Go, and Keyboard functionalities, the set also contains a number of bonus supplements, such as:

All-new The Shark is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy of Jaws feature-length documentary
Two-hour The Making of Jaws documentary
Behind-the-scenes featurettes:
- Jaws: The Restoration
- From the Set
Jaws Archives that features "storyboards, production photos, and marketing materials, as well as a special segment on the Jaws phenomenon"
Deleted scenes
Outtakes
Original theatrical trailer

Re: Jaws - 8/14/12

It's great to get official confirmation on the release. And it's very nice to see the original artwork used. I do hope a Digibook is offered.

The "leaked" list we saw from the Criterion forum is paying off. I believe most of the dates announced are matching up.

Re: Jaws - 8/14/12

I'm glad they put the trailer back on there...that was one of my only gripes with the 25th anniversary release.
Now we can only hope for the original mono and, of course, that Universal doesn't DNR the hell out of the transfer.

More on the release. In their tech specs, they also list 2.0 DTS mono audio. And they mention Spielberg/Amblin were involved in the restoration.

And of course, the UK gets a nice steelbook version, which releases on September 3rd.
