Re: Foreign Cinema in BLU (part 2)

I've not got sleeves for any of these, but the latest Cue magazine (UK) reveals the following releases (not sure if any of these have been announced for US release yet):

Knowing - July 20th (audio commentary and 2 featurettes)
Bronson - July 6th (making of, intro from charles bronson and a featurette)
Valykyrie - June 8th (all the DVD extras plus loads of exclusive featurettes)
Watchmen - July 27th (2 hours of extras, 3 disc set)
Three Kingdoms - July 27th
Italian Job (original) - June sometime (maybe 15th? it was in the last issue)

BFI aim to have 25 blu releases by the end of 2009

Not a concern for me. I am not letting film distributors dictate what I am watching based on their location. I use a region free Panasonic player.

The Red Baron is listed on Amazon.co.uk for October 12th! Showbox has been regionfree so far. Hopefully, this will be no different. Was interested in the German release, but it was locked.

Region-locked according to the Beav.

And it's framed in the (preferable, I think) 1.85:1 ratio.

Probably not; the majority of Optimum's releases have been locked. *sigh*

I'm guessing this never came out? No listing on Amazon.co.uk.

It was delayed a week and is an HMV exclusive. :-(

Re: Foreign Cinema in BLU (part 2)

I've seen mention on a few boards of people receiving their copies of the Red Shoes. Someone on AVS said there is "no region coding on the back of the disc" which had me very briefly excited again, but I think he means it simply isn't printed on the case. It's probably still locked to RB, unfortunately. Criterion better not take forever to get this out in the US...

The disc is Region-B locked.

Has anyone picked up Mesrine?

I've heard that it only has French subs.

DVD Beaver on The Red Shoes. Those screencaps have me salivating for the eventual Criterion release!

Same here. I think I'll just buy that version if Amazon.UK sells it soon.

I can't have that link open without wanting desperately to drop several hundred dollars on a region-free Blu player. Whyyyy did this have to be locked...

Re: Foreign Cinema in BLU (part 2)

The theatrical restoration release earlier this year had the Janus logo at the beginning, so a Criterion release is definite, probably by the end of the year.

Let's go with 'likely' and leave 'definite' with your stack of Criterion Ran BDs, eh?

Re: Foreign Cinema in BLU (part 2)

I would just like to share this bit of info with those of you interested in a region free palyer: the new OPPO BDP-83 is not only one of the best BD players but the new 0601 firmware allows a simple remote hack for region free BD & DVD!! It will play any disc BD or otherwise from anywhere in the world...as long as your display can handle PAL 576i for DVD. I've read reviews of the 83s upconversion with its Anchor bay chipset but I rely on my Lumagen so all video is set to Direct Source; it also can decode all the lossless formats onboard. I mention this because many are missing great films that will probably not be released ever in the US on Blu-Ray: do you really think that a US company will release Richard Lester's THE BED SITTING ROOM in high-definition? The BFI is doing a remarkable job in remastering classic and intelligent cinema while we are stuck with the latest Block(head)busters. Anyway, if you can pull the trigger on one of these machines be sure to search for the region free code...you won't regret your purchase
But your wallet will after you start ordering BDs from around the world...
BTW: THE RED SHOES looks absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.

One last comment: I own a PS3 and have always loved it for BD playback (and the occasional game) but the OPPO is whisper quiet in comparison if that's an issue for you. Of course, the PS3 can't be region hacked.
