Blu Ray releases questionable
Can someone explain to me why companies are seem to be more focused on releasing current shitty movies on Blu-Ray verse classics? I would like to buy a Blu-Ray player, but at this point I can't justify it. Very few of my favorite flicks are on the format. I think American Psycho and the Kubrick films are the only ones currently released that I want. What kind of time table are people expecting before we see a large amount of announcements? Am I looking at years before they release these? Hasn't Blu-Ray already been around for 2-3 years? I'm just really confused on why there haven't been more released. I keep seeing DVD's released without a Blu-Ray counterpart. Why?
Movies I want: Suspiria Requiem For A Dream American Beauty A Nightmare On Elm Street Friday the 13th Leprechaun House of Sand and Fog Magnolia Donnie Darko Lion King Jurassic Park Alien Gremlins Ghostbusters Who Framed Roger Rabbit Critters Groundhog Day Lost in Translation The Royal Tenenbaums Beverly Hills Cop Happy Gilmore Wizard of Oz |
You have your list of movies you want. Other people have their lists.
The ones that make THE decision as to which ones get produced has their list. There aren't near as many Blu-ray replicating facilities as there are DVD ones. I could be wrong, but I believe it takes longer to produce BD software. You just can't do 'em all whenever you want. Also, this should probably be in the HD forum. |
Why would any studio release all their good movies now and get, potentially a couple hundred thousand sales (if even that - look at The Godfather Trilogy) when they could wait 2-3 years and get a couple million?
|
Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Darko, Friday the 13th and Groundhog Day are all scheduled for 09. Wouldn't be surprised to see Beverly Hills Cop as well, if Ratner's done with the 4th next year.
Movies like Suspiria and The Wizard of Oz are probably being specially mastered for Blu releases. But in general, studios like to hold back on their big product so they can really push it when the time comes. Certainly Jurassic Park on Blu, Universal will do all three as a set and go all-out on the extras and whatnot. |
Wizard of Oz is coming in 09 as well.
Same with Happy Gilmore. |

Because maybe, just maybe, Blu-ray will die a death befitting every niche technology.

What are the big studios waiting for? It is almost Christmas again.

My biggest complaint is when a new version of a DVD comes out, but a Blu-ray is not released with it. THAT, I just don't understand. |
Only 10% of vinyl music has ever been released on cd.
Only 10% of vhs releases have been released on dvd. I'd expect the same for blu-ray in proportion to dvd. Worth noting that tons of stuff has been released on dvd(mostly tv shows) that never got vhs release. |
Unfortunately, Donnie Darko is one of those "current shitty movies" that is being released on Blu-ray.

True, but the movies are what's gonna make or break Blu-ray. I would have thought that a slightly better selection would be available in time for Christmas this year to help boost the format.

 Seriously....if anyone with a decent enough size screen sitting at a proper distance cannot see the difference in detail and clarity offered by Blu-ray, then perhaps they need to make an appointment with their local optometrist because they need glasses, contacts, or maybe lasik.... |
Nightmare on Elm Street is already out.
Other than that, current shitty movies are the ones that are pushing the big sales of the week. It's not going to happen with Leprechaun. |

I would be in for Leprechaun too, as well as Puppetmaster series.
|
i think it's kinda hilarious that the OP complained there weren't enough "classics" on Blu-ray and then followed it up with that list of desired movies.

Donnie Darko is getting released in Feb. 09. Warner is putting The Wizard Of Oz (along with Ben-Hur, Gone With The Wind, and North By Northwest) out in 2009 as well. And while Suspiria hasn't been announced yet, Dimension has gotten the rights from Blue Underground, so I'd be surprised if a Blu-Ray release wasn't in the cards.

why did blue underground have the rights? I thought anchor bay still had it. dimension just has the rights to a remake right?
|
Leprechaun BR would be great if they used green cases instead of the blue.
