Amazon.com is listing one of my favorite comedies to be released on blu-ray on January 27th.

Ehhhh. Definitely a movie where the standard DVD is all I'd ever need.

I'm sure it will make some people happy though.

"Needle Nose Ned's Picture in Picture Track"

Wonder what that is exactly...

I imagine that it is a picture in picture commentary with Stephen Tobolowsky, who was Ned Ryerson in the film.

Looks like Columbia finally replied to his emails.

If so, I'm in, lol.

I love this movie, but I may wait for a sale.

tylergfoster 11-18-08 05:58 AM

I only hope Sony opts to use something other than the soul-crushingly, eye-breakingly, brain-rapingly bad artwork they plopped onto the last DVD.

Anybody else pick this up today? I can not locate this special feature anywhere on the disc, and some reviews i've read do nothing to help. It's not listed in the special features menu.

Maybe even Sony thought it was lame and dropped it...

How is the video and audio? I'm thinking about picking this up for 20 if I can make it out today (and find a copy).

From the caps at DVD Beaver, it looks decent. It apparently doesn't have DNR or EE (well maybe a little EE, but it's not bad at all), which is a relief these days. I don't think it could look much better than it does.

Here's the link (click on the small shots to see the full-size caps): http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...ay_blu-ray.htm

HDD says there is 3 features, a commentary and a PiP track.

I'll nab this one when its $12 at Fry's.

Just got this disc today. It is indeed in the special features menu-- not under some weird name or anything, either.

I checked out the movie for a quick second; image quality looked fairly good. Based on what I saw, I wouldn't let the image quality preclude a purchase.

Went ahead and picked it up just awhile ago. If I can get it within the next month in a B1G1F then I'll just return it. Haven't had a chance to check out the quality yet. Hopefully we will see more Bill Murray comedies like Stripes, Caddyshack, and Kingpin (although he isn't the main character) released sooner than later.

Wait - what player do you have? That track is Profile 1.1 so if you have a Profile 1.0 it won't even show up.

Sharp BD-HP20.

That probably explains it...

Yep, that is why. Profile 1.0.

Interesting that they use that approach. I think it'd be better if the feature were listed, but when clicked it would say that the particular blu-ray player being used doesn't support the feature.

I think its better just to make it invisible that way it may not piss you off as much knowing what you are missing by having older hardware.

I thought about that. It does make sense for that reason, but some people DO read the packaging and look over the special features list. I suppose the proportion of buyers who comb over the special features on the packaging and then cross-reference it to the actual on-disc features list is small, however.

The back cover does not mentioned that you need Profile 1.1 to use this special feature. Sony is in the wrong here for advertising special features that not everybody can access.

I wouldn't have minded as much if they let me know before I bought it.

Usually there is a * and size 2 font saying you need a 1.1 to play certain features. Time to get a new player if you want to experience Blu-ray 100%.

Unless I am blind, I do not see it listed anywhere on the back cover. I don't mind, I just think Sony should do a better job of letting their customers know before purchase.

Out of 50+ titles, this is the first feature I found out I can't access (aside from BD Live, which I would never use anyways). Hope this isn't the norm, because that's like giving early adaptors a swift kick in the balls.

I was actually impressed, or at least surprised by the effort on the Needle-Nose track.

I just expected a little PIP box with carved up featurettes a la Young Frankenstein or The Dark Knight, but they actually got Stephen Tobolowsky to come in do a whole green screen bit.

Cool, I may actually buy this at some point...
