Redbox goes Blu

Original source:

Despite the obvious color bias in the company's name, Red Box is giving Blu-ray a fighting chance. After hearing that BDs were popping up in rental kiosks around the Northwest, it's now looking mighty official that Blu-ray Discs will be headed to its rental boxes around the country. As of now, the firm has made space for a dedicated Blu-ray section on its website, though it's currently empty and waiting for occupants. Impulse renting of BDs? Now there's something the BDA won't mind hearing.

Redbox, the company best know for red boxes (excuse the irony) rental kiosk which are found in various grocery stores and restaurants is now “officially” supporting Blu-ray. This coming after the “retailer” made space for Blu-ray on their official website.

The company’s pricing model is $1/24h, should we assume a similar pricing model for Blu-ray? Would you pay $2 for one day rental?

Have Blu-ray movies been showing up in your local Red Box?

Whoa cool, I used the Red Box frequently to rent DVD's. I'd love to rent Blu's for a couple bucks.

Actually, the fee will be the same as what they charge for DVD: 1$.

Now you can rent Blu-ray Discs from redbox kiosks at select Walmart locations. That's right, friend, get the movies you want, in the format you want, at the price you want to pay: Just $1 per night. Here are just a few of the terrific Blu-ray Discs now available at select redbox locations - something for everyone in the family!

That sounds great!

Moopher 11-17-08 04:06 PM

Wow! I hit walmart every Monday after work to pick up groceries, but now that we have a redbox, I will definetly start renting.

The Bus 11-17-08 04:09 PM

Yes! Can't wait to rent Salò!

tonymontana313 11-17-08 04:09 PM

That's pretty awesome that they are not raising the prices. It's making me consider cancelling my Blockbuster online sub.

GenPion 11-17-08 04:18 PM

Sweet! I'm going to have to check this out. Sounds awesome.

I'm pretty hyped about this, I think I'm going to give it a try. I wonder if this will do any damage to Netflix now that they raised their BD rental prices. And I wonder how long Redbox will be able to keep that price. Would be nice though, I think I'll take advantage of it while I can.

The really great thing about Redbox, unless it's going to change for BR and I doubt it will, is that you almost never have to pay to rent anything since there are so many free rental codes out there all the time.

I hope that spreads to other locations. The one I go to is inside an Albertsons and I don't have a Walmart near me.

Oh good news, thanks for posting Pro-B. I love Redbox and may have no further use for Netflix if this pans out.

This is great news. I've been saying for a while they need to stop devoting so much space to awful direct-to-video releases and at least stock a few of the big releases in Blu-Ray.

There are a couple sites that list all the redbox codes. Some are for new customers only, most are usable once per account/card, it looks like sometimes you can re-use certain codes.

We have a thread in bargains where we list these sites/codes, and bump the free Monday code each week.

This is fantastic news!! Thanks Pro-B! Your contributions to this site don't go unnoticed, no matter how many people want to tear you down.

Don't go canceling netflix just yet.

Remember that redbox pretty much only carries a handful of new releases and tons of direct-to-video junk. I use about two free rentals per week from them, and am hard pressed to find stuff worth watching.

Unless they radically change their policies (for a niche format), I can't imagine finding much to rent in BR there. They don't even stock any DVD classics or standards, why would they do it for BR?

I seriously doubt that the DVD selection will go anywhere for quite some time.

Are you serious? I looked on the calendar and it said "Never."

Until the day they change the name to Blubox.

I doubt it would do much. $1 a month extra is hardly a big deal, and I think a lot of Netflix customers have gotten used to having the discs mailed to them. This brings back the old paradigm where you have to go get them and return them.

It might be nice as an occasional supplement to a Netflix account though, for times when you need a movie right now.

At a minimum, you should get one every Monday from Redbox. It's free after all.

Anyone find any Redbox locations in the Kansas City area with Blu-ray discs yet?
