The Last Samurai. Loved Watanabe in this one. Good piece of work by Zwick.

Gomorrah (Criterion Collection) - Meh. Glad I Netflixed this & didn't blind buy this during the B&N sale. Very overrated IMO. By no means a bad film, but aside from the setting I found there to be nothing very original. The story is well told & the actings seems very natural but I never connected with any of the characters. Solid transfer & the DTS-HD Master is exsquisite, but I can't ever see myself watching the movie again.

TERMINATOR SALVATION. I really liked the movie when I saw it in a movie theater but when I watched it on BD, I was blown away by it. The movie is 10000x better then T3. It had the good amount of action, nice cinematography (poor guy who was yelled at by Mr. Bale) and the whole setting had super grayish/metal colors. This is the right direction in the terminator franchise. ****

TRUE BLOOD Season 1. Watched episode 3 last night. Not bad. Starting to dig a romance plot between 2 lead characters. First two episodes were "meh" but it's getting better.

G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra. Wow, I loved it. It was very fun popcorn flick. I have to say that Sommers created another masterpiece. Loved PARIS chase sequence, freaking Storm Shadow was a bad ass (cooler then Snake Eyes). Liked it more then STAR TREK and TRANSFORMERS 2. ****

I LOVE YOU, MAN. It was OK. You can see it once. A few decent laughs (billboard sequence, lol). **

DRAG ME TO HELL. Sam Raimi returns. Freaking classic. Loved it. Even my mom who hates scary movies said the movie was good. I liked that old UNIVERSAL logo, EVIL DEAD type "humor" and gore, the "twist" was cool too. I really recommend it to all horror fans. A must own BD. ****

Sin City (Alliance Release)

Love the comics and I feel the same about the film. Looks so much better than my old SD copy

That's probably a good thing.

My daughters and I watched Nim's Island this morning. They enjoyed it. The PQ and AQ were great.

Nim's Island was awful... though I'll admit I'm not exactly representative of the target audience.

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell (1995) on Blu-ray for the first time. The original version of "GITS" comes as a bonus in the new CG-enhanced "GITS 2.0" Blu-ray so I watched that to get the 'pure' experience first (shame it's a crappy 1080i upconvert that looks no better than an upscaled DVD). WOW, what a freaking great flick! A thinking man's action movie (the cybernetic boobies don't hurt! ) with the best elements from "Blade Runner" and "Robocop" mixed into a socio-political plot that makes sense. I had heard Kenji Kawai's "GITS" song before but out of context; to hear it within the context of the movie (as the Major navigates those rusty Honk Kong canals) was a freaking revelation. After seeing this and "Appleseed E.X." (on HD-DVD) I'm just dying for more Masamune Shirow-inspired anime goodness.

Quantum of Solace (2008) on Blu-ray for the first time. Director Marc Foster juggles a lot of balls up in the air and, except for the title song (forgettable), the main villain (Mathieu Amalric phoning it in), an impractical-even-for-Bond parachute stunt and the stylized location fonts (too much!) comes up aces. Tons of exciting action sequences (particularly that footrace across Piazza del Campo) and well-timed character moments for the supporting cast (Judi Dench, Olga Kurylenko, Giancarlo Giannini, etc.) to shine with just enough room for the plot to breathe. After seeing both "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace" recently (a month apart) I have to admire how the James Bond producers and writers (Paul Haggis & Co.) have resurrected the franchise as a lean, mean and polished modern-day action/adventure machine. Daniel Craig's Bond isn't just handed his opening barrel shot at the end of "QOS," he's earned it after putting himself through the grinder both physically and (without getting sappy or sentimental) emotionally. There's no way in hell I'm missing Craig's next Bond movie in theaters.

Just finished Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica...and I'm hooked. I'm watching BSG: Razor tonight...and then it's on to Season 4. This show is really making it hard for me to watch Christmas movies right now...

Public Enemies. Some complain about how the movie was shot with all the close ups and everything, but I really enjoyed how it made me feel right there in the action. In my opinion, Johnny Depp was great as Dillinger.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

The A/V quality was good, but the movie was very disappointing; it felt like Hogwarts 90210. Was the book laced with as much of the relationship stuff as the movie?
