As for what I watched last: The Third Man. It was a good film with great cinematography and fine performances. The story was a bit disappointing, and the score (while memorable) seemed out of place. Overall, I am glad I watched it. I didn't connect to it the same way many people do though. I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I'm merely stating my opinion on the film. I haven't decided if I'm going to keep this as a rental or pick it up sometime later. While good, I actually don't want to own a film that so many cherish as an all time classic that I wasn't enamored with myself.

I watched Mad Men S1. The PQ was excellent and the show is filmed very cinematically even though it suffers from some of the inevitable drawbacks of having to shoot an hour's worth of airing footage a week. Then again, maybe the flat mise-en-scene is a throwback to the sets of the day. Either way, excellent series.

Gattaca - An excellent science fiction film. My only quibble with it is that the actor playing the head detective was pretty stiff, which made the climactic confrontation between him and Hawke unconvincing. PQ was very sharp, as expected. Uma Thurman was/is such a striking-looking woman.

^Great film!

The Devil's Rejects. Very good PQ. The film was pretty good, but it's not something I'd watch again.

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Last night I watched Friday the 13th (2009) and The Usual Suspects. Tonight I watched Revolutionary Road.

Friday the 13th was slightly better the second time around but I still don't like it as much as the originals from the 80's. Its entertaining enough I suppose but some things in it just didn't work for me I guess. It seemed like Jason was too smart in some ways to me.

The Usual Suspects was damn good. I somehow hadn't seen it until last night but really enjoyed it a lot. Wish the Blu-ray wasn't so barebones but for $10 guess can't really complain.

Revolutionary Road was probably one of the best of 2008 in my opinion however it was slightly depressing and I don't know if I'll watch it again and again. I always like DiCaprio and Winslet is very good in the movie as well.

The Sky Crawlers. A really strong film. I didn't find this to be among Oshii's best but it was still hypnotic and beautifully crafted with some true emotional underpinnings and strong philosophical questions.

2001: A Space Odyssey: One of my favorite movies. The PQ and AQ were fantastic.

A Bug's Life and Cars: Both movies PQ and AQ were outstanding. I did not like them as much as the other Pixar movies when they first came out but watching them again, I'm beginning to appreciate them more.

Crouching Tiger UK Steelcase, not an eye popper but a great visual presentation. AQ was flawless.

Black Sheep (1996)

Decent upgrade in PQ/AQ. Zero extras. Not as good as Tommy Boy, current owners might be over buying this again.

Knowing. I kinda liked it, I'm not sure yet. I'll probably know after I watch it again. The disc looked/sounded phenomenal. Total show-off material.

Watched Quarantine for the first time. By nature, it's not a movie with visuals that pop, but it's got terrific, enveloping sound. And not a bad horror flick!

[Rec] is about 100 times better than Quarantine. After seeing it, I can't stand Quarantine, which I now find perhaps the worst remake in the history of film.

Back on topic, season 1 of Battlestar Galactica was gorgeous on HD-DVD.

The Siege - Very good PQ, though not amazing, and serviceable audio. Not a bad film either, though it does get very formulaic at times.

Watchmen - Awesome BD in every way. PQ is perfect, AQ just as solid. The DC is a much richer, rewarding film than the TC.

I watched an hour of Watchmen, but it was boring me so I took it off. I just can't stand Zach Snyder's direction. I disliked his Dawn of the Dead remake, 300, and now - apparently - this.

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Flyboys - extremely dumbed-down rendition of a story that needed no enhancement, utterly trite and predictable. But any movie about WWI air warfare is better than no movie, and the CG air combat, while featuring somewhat exaggerated physics, was much fun to watch, and the PQ/AQ was great.

Watchmen. Took the afternoon to watch this and I have to say that i enjoyed it. I found myself laughing maybe a little too much bit I really enjoyed it. Now to re-watch it with the "intelligent" commentary track. AQ & PQ were flawless.

Tommy Boy

Doesn't look great, but it's a definite step-up from the DVD.
