So tempted to watch Gravity again, but instead settled for this



Sir Run Run Shaw and a couple other producers blew their budget on Sean Connery and had to pad the rest of the "All Star Cast" with aging B and C listers like Karl Malden, Joseph Campanella, and hilariously scene chewing Martin Landau. The film is rife with clunky exposition, poor optical composites, weak model work, and a ridiculously upbeat triumphant march ending despite the fact that half of NYC has been obliterated and with it a sizable chunk of the USA's GDP.

It's a sad affair, yet I can't help pulling it out every couple years. Guess it's just fun to see Sean Connery slumming.



Been watching this piece meal- usually to cap an evening or when I don't have time/interest to watch a second or third feature. Last night I caught from The Who's performance thru the beginning of the rain storm.

Vintage docs and music concerts work great as contextual mood setters when I watch a movie from the same era. The combination is immersive. Might save the rest of this for something like that.

Nifty, well told thriller of a Truck Driver in Australia playing cross country cat and mouse games with a likely serial killer. Stacey Keach is quite likable in the part of the poetry quoting trucker, and there was one throwaway bit where I almost got out of my seat and cheered when Keach's character tries to pull a hero move and commandeer someone's cycle only to immediately spin out and have to go back to his truck.
Little bits like that made this a real pleasure.

Video quality is sadly no great shakes as it looks to have been mastered direct from a release print. The 5.1 track is also mixed in a bizarre way, with all the environmental and foley effects and music seeing to come from mainly from the rear channels with all the dialogue up front. Interesting gimmick, but it began to be distracting after a while. Fortunately the original mono track is also included and sounded fine and substantially more appropriate, especially given the state of the PQ.

Exceedingly long and somewhat labored globe hopping story of spy games between the Russians, Americans, Cubans, and French in the run up to the Cuban Missile Crisis. I found it ironic that while this is generally considered lesser Hitchcock, it's one of the few films of his that is almost devoid of blatant contrivances to further the tension or story. Not a bad or uninteresting film, though I won't be revisiting it anytime soon.
Good supporting worker from Dean Wormer as a Cuban Revolutionary, Roscoe Lee Brown as a florist/intelligence operative and Karin Dor as an anti-Castro Cuban agent. Also nice to see Michel Piccoli show up towards the end in a pivotal role.
The disc was one of several in the annoying book-style set that came scratched to hell. Fortunately there were no hiccups at all playing it back.

Before I Fall...this movie is just not good. Butterfly Effect mixed with Groundhog Day. Terrible cliches and tropes. Very uninteresting.

I'd seen this before and remembered enjoying it. It ended up taking me 3 nights to watch it in its entirety because I just couldn't stay awake.

It held up fairly well, I guess. It definitely had the feel of a remake of the original than a straight sequel though.

Giant from


Long (3.5 hrs), progressive soap about an privileged Eastern girl marrying into a Texas cattle barons lifestyle. Some long films feel long- this one just flew by.

Dean pretty much steals the pic out from under Hudson and Taylor, despite being saddled with some of the weakest, older age make-up ever. He's also not really up to the task of playing a man well beyond his years, though he is electric as the difficult young ranch hand.
Impressive supporting cast too with the likes of Rod Taylor, Sal Mineo, Carroll Baker, and Dennis Hopper all showing up. Hopper in particular gets a chance to play a real character for a change.
All of it contributed to a movie that at times, like any good soap, is ridiculously entertaining.

25+ years ago I owned the Dean Laserdisc boxed set. I could have sworn I watched Giant back then, but little of it beyond Dean stuck with me. Tried to watch it again on DVD, but the PQ on it was horrendous and I gave up after about ten minutes. The film is unfortunately full of long cut optical dissolves with the PQ taking quite a hit. The difference when the film goes to straight cuts is ...startling.
Overall I'm mightily impressed with the job Warner did with it.

From King Shark to Grodd and Gorilla City through the first half of the team up with Green Arrow.
Hawkgirl was a favorite character in the animated JLU, so I wasn't too keen on how she's portrayed here- but otherwise, there's just too much wonderful comic universe nonsense that they are incorporating, and most of it consistently entertaining, that it's hard to complain about any one thing.

The Lego Batman Movie...looks amazing in 3D. Watching this now and the depth and effects are marvelous. Really good stuff. That narration of Batman during Logos had me smiling. Just meant to say looks really good in format and what a hoot of a movie. I'm like grinning ear to ear through this thing. Will Arnett is so perfect. Not sure I'm loving Zach as Joker, but still solid casting all around.

It came out on April 4 and finally it is availabe to rent at Netflix. WTF??

Watched 2 more episodes of Continuum: Season One while we ate dinner: The Politics of Time and Playtime.

If I hadn't found this at a flea market for $1.60, I'd have probably never bought it outright. Having watched all but 2 episodes of the 1st season, I can't see myself buying seasons 2, 3, & 4. This has turned into yet another cop show, albeit with a few high tech gadgets, I'm already bored with it. Don't understand how it got such rave reviews.
