The Jackal - Took longer to load than any other movie I've ever put in my PS3. Movie wasn't bad though, pretty adrenaline charged, nothing too special though. PQ was decent.

Black Dyanmite - I loved this movie! I just don't even know what to say about it because I've never seen anything like it. Just totally ridiculous!

A local theater is doing a midnight screening of this tomorrow night. It interests me, but my guts haven't been very cooperative lately so I don't know if I'll make it. Would be fun to see it for the first time on the big screen, based on everything I've heard about it.

Vanishing Point. This was my first time watching it and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

HALF-BAKED (1998): Bob Saget steals the movie with a super-filthy cameo and half-a-dozen recognizable names (Jon Stewart, Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia, etc.) drop by for their minute or two of fun. Guillermo Diaz (the Mexican drug dealer on Showtime's "Weeds") was better than Chappelle and Breuer with his ridiculously hilarious role of Scarface. As a whole though this one runs out of steam way before it's 80 minutes are up. My HD-DVD started skipping so I had to finish it on the DVD side of the combo; SD pic was only marginally worse than the high-def version.
David Cronenberg's A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (2005): a disappointment, especially since it marked the first collaboration between Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen. Good actors stuck playing variations of troubled Douglas Silk character types that have their world turned upside by very simplistic storyline coincidences. Only William Hurt seems to realize that everything in the movie (including his character) is happening in slow-motion and at a reduced speed (dialogue, movement, beats of action, etc.) so he hams it up (to great comedic effect) while the rest of the cast soldier on. Not Cronenberg's finest, or the sharpest-looking BD I've seen (it's rather soft actually).

Planning to watch Predators tomorrow, so I just watched Predator (original BD) and Predator 2 back-to-back. First film was as bad-ass as I remembered it. But I forgot how bad most of the second film was. Pretty much only the last 30 minutes was truly watchable. Oh well, bring on RR's flick!

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Watched Yojimbo for the first time a couple of nights ago. It was my first time watching a Kurosawa film, and my first venture into classic Japanese cinema.

Needles to say, the movie was spectacular. I loved every minute, and I'm heading back out today to grab Sanjuro as well. I can't wait to check out some more Kurosawa films, and I'm extremely excited for Seven Samurai later this year. Honestly, with Criterion films, I have watched them and liked them, and understood why they were so heralded. However, this was the first time I literally could not wait to watch it again and check out more of the director's work.

Also watched Black Dynamite again. Like a fine wine, it keeps getting better with age. I think this may be one of my top 5 favorites of the last few years.

Walkabout - Its a crime that this can be had right now for under $15 & most here don't own this let alone have even seen it. A truly astounding piece of directing that has never looked better.

I currently have the SD Criterion checked out from the library. I'll be watching it tonight and if it lives up to the hype, I'll be $13 lighter after I run my errands tomorrow.

I still need to netflix this one. The only Nicolas Roeg film I have seen was The Man Who Fell to Earth, which despite most Criterions fans loving, I saw nothing in the film that really appealed to me or my artistic sensibilities... which is part of the reason why I have hesitated to see Walkabout. Maybe this will fare better for me, maybe not, but I'm going to rent it soon and see about a purchase during the next sale if I want it.

What Just Happened.
Surprisingly, I actually loved this. This is one of the best Barry Levinson films in years. And Bruce Willis was HILARIOUS in this! Easily worth the $2 I spent on it at a closing Hollywood Video.

Fired Up/The Running Man. Neither film was worth my time in my estimation.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through The Man Who Fell to Earth (work schedule kicking my ass), and also see nothing in it yet. Unless something amazing happens, my incredibly high expectations for Walkabout are lowered quite a bit.

FWIW, while it can still be considered an art film, Walkabout has far more mass appeal than MWFtE does.

The Man who Fell to Earth is a very different film from Walkabout, do not avoid Walkabout because you don't like TMWFTE. The difference is night & day, although the enjoyment of Walkabout comes from appreciating the story told by the images the director captures, its not a film about a complex plot or story professing through dialogue, so if one isn't open to that, they will not likely enjoy Walkabout.
