Marked for Death - This is Seagal in his prime? The guy moves so slowly, and his fight scenes are so poorly choreographed, that I can't see how he got so popular. At least some of the action is decent. PQ is good, not great. AQ decent. No extras.

Major bummer, though, as my Sony S-350 decided to freeze and die with 4 minutes left in the film. Now I've gotta mail it back to Sony so they can replace it. Reminds me that I need a backup player for this type of situation. Lame.

why wait?, I think 'Survival' is still available on-demand - IMO 'Survival' is ALOT better than 'Diary'

The Sand Pebbles - yeah I know Fox was accoused for DNR'ing this title along side 'Patton', but I didn't mind it ... and the music - wow!

Duplicity - Not a bad movie by any means. Still not using Clive in the right role but I enjoyed the movie. I'm not a Roberts hater, I really have no opinion of her, I've only seen her in I think 2 movies. She is fine in this movie. Ending was a bit underwhelming. Solid PQ.

Hot Tub Time Machine - Just as funny the second time.
The Crazies - Surprisingly, I enjoyed it more on my second watch.

9 (the musical one). Not bad but ended up fast forwarding a few of the songs, just weren't that engaging.

The Crazies (2010) - A rare horror remake that works very well. Largely because Bullock from Deadwood rules (can't think of the actors name, he will always be Bullock to me). The director has a really interesting eye, I'd like to see more from him there is a great sense of dread that never lets up in this movie. Guys in the white suits were scarier though in the original. Audio was weird, sounded really soft in spots.

I used to be the same, but after this first season of Justified, he'll be Raylan Givens to me from now on. Deadwood's the (slightly) better show, but Olyphant does a much better/interesting turn as Givens than as Bullock.

The Cowboys - Popped this in again to watch it with the director commentary, and all of the special features. I was sort of meh about John Wayne before this month, but now think very highly of him as an actor. This film grew on me as well. Took me awhile to get over what seemed like the silly notion of those kids handling the job. But once I got over that, figuring that it probably did happen like that back in that day, I really loved the film. Some excellent performances, particularly Bruce Dern.

Dune - I just love this movie, I never get tired of it. The sandworms are some of the best movie monsters to this day. The blu-ray is a significant upgrade, the film has never looked better.

^It wasn't his rating of Star Trek that got me asking myself the same question, but of the horrible Remember Me a few posts above

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Hot Rod - Since my BD player is currently out of commission, I decided to toss on an HD DVD. I love Samberg's humor, and I got this for about $5, so I figured it was worth a shot. And I thought it was hilariously irreverent. The plot is so insanely bizarre, and there's so much random comedy thrown in... but it all worked for me. Haters of Samberg will loathe this beyond belief. PQ was crisp, but never amazing. AQ started off a bit weak but kicked it up towards the latter half.

It was the culmination of the two that caught my eye.

No Country, For Old Men (2-Disc Collector's Edition) - Haven't seen this since it was in theaters. Love it even more upon second viewing. A near flawless film.

Couldn't agree more. It get's better with every viewing.

Last watched:

Summer Hours. Beautifully under-stated film. This is an exceptional piece of art and should be required viewing for anyone interested in genuinely mature film-making.

Gomorrah.
Disturbing as hell, and easily one of the best mafia movies ever made. It was like watching a train-wreck in motion for each of the characters, and you can't help but feel the adrenaline as this movie takes you down this dark, disturbing path. I still can't believe I never heard of the Camorra before seeing this film.

Lola Montès. I honestly had no idea what to expect when I put this on. I had never seen a Max Ophüls film before. Surely, based on this masterpiece, I should try and see more of his movies. I can't believe I had never even heard of this before Criterion put it out -- but here it is for all to enjoy. Absolutely a beautiful film. The further along you get in the picture the more entranced you become, and it all leads to an ending that is sure to sends chills up your spine. I won't say anything more for the uninitiated, but will add that this is absolutely something to give a fair shake to for the entire picture - it takes everything this film has to offer to grasp all it's beauty.

Showgirls. What. The. Fuck. This was a bizarre, deranged, soft-core porn film. I somewhat enjoyed it for the visually stylish direction of Paul Verhoeven but the movie itself was just awful. I can only imagine that it was intentional, because this flick was so over-the-top ridiculous I don't know where to begin. I should probably start at the screenplay... and move along. And yet I own this, the result of a blind-buy from the Deep Discount sale. Not really sure if it's one I should keep or sell. Elizabeth Berkley looks great in HD though!

Coco Before Chanel. This was one of my favorites of the bunch. Audrey Tautou completely outdoes herself with this performance, it was one of her finest to date. Anyway, this movie looked amazing, and how can you not love the Alexandre Desplat score? The entire thing was beautiful to behold... the magic of Coco's work was captured here (and I was not familiar beforehand) and the sadness of her life in love.

Event Horizon

Still as awesome as I remember. It so much fun revisiting this film. A/V quality was surprisingly fantastic for a 10 year old film.
