Yeah, but they then gush over the Corsair scene where they're all in it, so I can't really trust all their decisions with ROTK. ;) But seriously, from a storytelling point of view, it's necessary to have some conclusion with Saruman. He was the main villain of the previous film.

I forgot about the breaking of the staff, which I liked. The Mouth of Sauron didn't really add much, except to reveal that Aragorn thought Frodo was dead, hence his comment "For Frodo" being a little more in context.

what do you mean?- Saruman's demise in the book was in the Scouring of the Shire scene, but I'm sure you know that already.

We need a "Nazgul Edit" of RotK :)

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the confrontation with Saruman does occur in the book, but his death doesn't occur until way later during the Scouring of the Shire. Gandalf and the Witch-King due go head-to-head so to speak, but I believe that happens at the gates of Minas Tirith, not some random spot in the city. Also, the Mouth of Sauron part is in the book, but I'm pretty sure Aragorn doesn't behead him.

Yes, I am aware of that, and am very, very glad that wasn't included in the movie, as ROTK already had enough endings for two more trilogies.

that's part of the problem with the scouring scene removed you really cant have an unconcluded character arch - but even with the storyline altered, for the filmmakers to write/film an alternate ending that they still find flawed, there's something wrong on someone's behalf

I love the scene in which Merry pledges his allegiance to Theoden, but I know it being gone doesn't hurt the story. Same thing with the added scene after Gandalf and Pippin talk to Denethor.

the Saruman scene exists in the book as such, but his death - no. in the book Gandalf and the WitchKing actally talk at the Gate... both scenes feature the Palantier that was largely jettisoned from the script for 'Return'. the beheading of the mouth of saruron was added to the movie. The death of the WitchKing was a tremendous letdown in the book it was much more lyrical and powerful

I can't wait to get this on blu, but will most likely wait until EE versions unless there is a coupon or something similar in this set.

I barely have time to watch the theatricals in one sitting. Not waiting for the EE. Getting the theatricals. Like I did with the DVDs, I'll probably get the EEs in the far future discounted.

If it's in DTS-HD MA 7.1 I will have to get it! :D What I like most on BD is the audio portion of it. I just really HOPE that the transfer is as good as The Fellowship.....IMO this is how a transfer should be done! Most of the BD movies I have(or seen) don't match up as well as this.

As much as I am a completest when it comes to LOTR (I own both versions on DVD, the only ones I did not get rid of the older version when I bought a DC) I can never see me watching the TC ever again. I'll wait for the EE on BD.

Already have the theatrical cuts and extended editions on DVD.

I'll wait for the inevitable tricked-out editions before I pick these up on Blu.

As for me, i know i couldn't wait for the Extended Cuts ...

Will surely double dipping, but really can't wait for this set to come out in April :)

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

I'm going to pass on this. I already own the 2-disc theatrical cuts on DVD as well as the Extended Editions of all 3 movies.

If they release the Extended Editions on Blu-Ray, then I might bite. What I find weird about this set is the bonus material is being released as DVD's and it's the exact same material from the 2-disc theatrical DVD's.

Completest fail. There are at least three versions of each film, all with unique special features.

so only the ext. editions had 6.1 soundmixes - right? or did the DVD's of the theatrical cuts also have them?

E Unit 12-15-09 08:56 AM

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

i believe the theatrical DVD's only had 5.1 EX tracks.

Giles 12-15-09 09:07 AM

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

'EX' which technically IS a phantom middle rear channel of sound (this is how Disney/pixar is non-advertising the fact that the blu's of 'Up' & 'Monsters Inc.' are in fact 6.1, but just don't want to bother indicating them as such

Discs 2, 4, and 6 appear to be identical to the 2-disc TE DVD's respective second discs. Warner Home Video is probably saving costs, since now they don't have to author, master, and press new discs. So if you have the 2-disc TE DVDs, you already have all these special features.

It also looks like the set has been prepped for being split into individual releases later, since the discs with the feature films on them all have the same three trailers.

I would love to be the stalwart and wait for the EEs, but I simply can't do it. I must have LOTR in HD, if that means double dipping, so be it.

im also holdin out for the EE's as well. And looking at the specs for the discs, Im not impressed that their doesnt seem to be any new features in HD. Ill rent them from either blockbuster/netflix or borrow them from a friend.

I'm a big fan of the films, but I'll wait for the EE. They're the versions I'm used to enjoying at this point; I'm not going to spend $60 or more on truncated cuts. I can wait.

I'll be tempted, but the theatrical cut of The Two Towers doesn't have the epic Boromir/Faramir/Denethor scene in it, among many other excellent additions throughout the trilogy. I'll resist...

Drop the digital copies and the DVD extras discs (along with the MSRP by about half, whatever it might be) and then I'd consider getting this. But as is, buying 9 discs when you really only want three of them is a complete and utter waste.
