re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
Bill Hunt says these should hit in December. He also said they may be featureless and that Peter Jackson was planning on saving all content, including new features, for the extended versions after The Hobbit is finished.
I'm still buying these no matter what, but that would suck if they are charging $70 for bare-bones theatrical versions. |
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
I love LOTR so much, but I'm not a big enough slut to lay down another $70 for the TEs, nuh-uh.

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
I'd have to say that the LOTR EE's are among the finest releases of DVDs in the history of the format. I do hope that the same care is given to the BD editions.

Meh. I told myself I'd buy whatever barebones BD version they put out, but... not at that price. However, it'll probably be two years before the EEs are released. Worth the wait?

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
I have never been a huge fan of the Lord of the rings films, (always found them very overrated) But having said that these films are loved by millions and will help sell a lot of bluray players so thats a good thing as is the fact that they are going to be availble now for fans of the film to add to there library.

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
There will be temptation to pick these up but I'll be waiting for the EE's. Unless there's a really, really good deal down the road....................
|
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
Here comes the Quadruple dip. I'm in. Hell I'd buy LOTR 10X
|
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
I'd rather watch the Extended versions in SD than the theatrical versions in HD, so put me down for passing on this set.
|
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
I just hope the EE BR's have the deleted scenes that didn't make the extended cut editions, Jackson on some of the commentaries have hinted that another box set would include more unrestored footage in supplement form, I'd love to see the Eowyn being stalked by the orc scene.

I agree. I just watched the extended versions over a long cold winter weekend, and loved every minute of the three films. Plus, the video and audio for that set is just fantastic - obviously not HD, but pretty darn close. I am not someone who watches LOTR's every six months, so I can certainly wait for the extended editions to hit blu-ray...I bought the theatrical version DVD's, and I NEVER watched them since I consider the extended versions the definitive cuts of the three films, so there is no point in wasting money on the blu-ray of the theatrical versions for me. |
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
^ personally I don't think I can wait three years (!) for the extended editions, by then technology will have advanced that the proposed 4K tv's and HD players will have been released in the marketplace.
|
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
I can't wait one year, let alone three. I did an Amazon pre-order at $69.99, hoping that at some point it dips down to $60 or below.
I like the EEs but honestly don't always have 17 hours to devote to each one, so the theatrical edition will do for now. |
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
While I like the EEs and prefer them to the theatrical versions (partly because seeing my name in the credits is pretty cool :) ), some of the added scenes should have remained on the cutting room floor. The theatricals are tighter, better-edited films in many ways. So yeah, I'll be getting this and anything else they release.

Can't find what audio format these will be in,does anyone know if it's in TrueHD or DTS HD/MA? If it's in MA I am definitely in on these!(mostly in TrueHD also). I too don't think I can wait 3 years for the EE version. I,m hoping the transfer is as good as the SD versions.IMO these are benchmark movies on how to transfer a movie(especially on the audio side).

Unless I can get the set for under $40, i'll wait |
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
Ill ask for the first set for xmas and then get the EE later on. I am a completist and want any and all LOTR versions they offer.

I actually prefer the theatrical cuts of Fellowship and Return (the extended of Fellowship drags, while the extended of Return completely kills the suspense of what happens to Aragorn when he goes to raise his army, even though it does restore the Saruman scene), so I will be buying this. When I watch the trilogy, I usually watch Fellowship TE, Two Towers EE, Return TE.

even though that scenes obviousily concludes Saruman's character arch, Jackson in the commentary does state even reinstated it still seems not that well edited and perfunctory. What was odd about that scene was that when Entertainment Weekly first published it's initial then 'new' pics of the trilogy Saruman's demise in green screen form was included - it felt like forever to see THAT scene in the extended cut of 'Return'. And yes, I agree with you Two Towers in it's extended cut is the best of the three - watching that cut on the huge Uptown theatre screen was near cathartic |

just not on their IMAX bluray titles ... ;) ... :mad2: |
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
hey if you have $70 to throw around for the inferior cuts more power to you
despite my love for the trilogy the number of times I actually watch it (extended or theatrical) doesn't warrant me rushing to get the first thing thrown out there by New Line. I have never even watched the theatrical cuts since the release of the extended cuts... there is no reason to. The high quality of the dvds are more than sufficiant to hold me over till the extended cuts are released |

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
If there are any new supplements in HD I may check them out. One of the rare film series I try to watch everything.
I think I could actually live with the TE's to a certain extent, but the lack of anything else with Saruman in ROTK ruins it for me. |

I think I tend to disagree with your opinions more often than not - no biggie.

While I prefer the EE of Fellowship, I agree with you about ROTK. Although it was nice to see Saruman, there were just too many unnecessary scenes added to an already long movie. I especially hated the scene you're referring to. |
re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!
I'll probably end up getting both sets. I presume the extra features will mimic the DVD counterparts, and thus these will have all the TV specials and trailers, and the Extended Editions later on will have the Jackson-produced bonus features.

I wouldn't be so sure. I don't know how much PJ will have to do with this set, but he has said multiple times in the past that he never wants to repeat extras from previous versions when there is a re-release. I'm not sure if this applies to a new format though. |
