Yeah, how dare they remove my precious few seconds of blatant racism.

I find it hilarious that this always comes up when Fantasia is re-released. The african-american servant donkey has NEVER been in the home video version of this, and hasn't been seen in the film since 1969. I doubt that very few of the people bitching about this change have actually seen it with their own eyes.

Then consider me rare. Cause I've seen the full thing. It's not the hardest to find.

Also, there's the part where you have black and white centaurs with the drunk Greek God and they removed only the black one. That's even worse than keeping the whole thing.

I'm just guessing, but maybe because the others were released internationally at the same time (or at least in the US first)?

I just want to say something about the racial stuff being removed. In no way do I care one way or the other, if it's gone it's gone. However at the same time the people "bitching" have a good point. They removed it because it's inappropriate now, but wasn't then. Basically they are physically changing the film to remove something that was in the film. How would you feel if they did that with a film from today, regardless of it being "inappropriate" or not? It's history and should be looked at like that. It was 1940 and it was a different time, so why must we try to erase the past because we're simply embarrassed by it?

Anyway, I'm just stating a point and am not getting upset about it at all.

I for one, APPROVE of that change for children to see the film now BUT the film major in me says. No...I want that original version as well. It's changing film history. Erasing things that matter in context of history.

"Finding" it is one thing. I'm talking about a legitimate release. It hasn't been legitimately available since 1969.

And I thought they restored the other centaurs in the DVD special edition? I was under the impression that only the "slave" donkey scene had been removed now.

I also approve of the edit of Sunflower. It added absolutely no context to the Pastoral Symphony and like it or not Fantasia is a better film without it. What I would have done is put the complete section unedited as a Bonus feature (with the appropriate cya disclaimer).

Here I doubt someone would say "hey bring back Sunflower she was part of my tender racist childhood" people just want those seconds back because of what it means in its cultural context, Fuck that we already know we were racist we don't have to bring back a few seconds to prove that point.

Now "Song of the South" is a title I would fight for its release

I was just answering the question. Now you're putting additional conditions to it.

I would have done the opposite - play the full movie by default, but have the option to skip it, for those who would like to pretend that kind of racism never existed.

I'm curious to find out if the new commentary track mentions the cutting of the Pastoral Symphony sequence, as the prior commentary made absolutely no mention of it, it's as if Disney execs deliberatly avoided the subject entirely and made sure the commentary track reflected that stance.

I've never approved of the edit, but hey, it's Disney. They could have easily gone the Warner Bros. route and just put a Whoopi Goldberg disclaimer at the beginning saying "Hey, sorry. We were bad" and be done with it. Everyone knows it's wrong. To cut it out is the same to me as claiming it was never there, which I think is worse.

It was mentioned somewhere in the text-based extras. It said something about how it was deleted in the 60s.

Pretty much the only way for it to be included in any way (let alone restored) would be if it were in the Disney Treasures line (speaking of which, shouldn't those have been announced by now?) then maybe having a nice little chat with Leonard Maltin would have been considered. But seeing as how it's been this way since 1969, and is a flagship title, that'll never happen.

maybe I shouldn't be surprised but neither Target or Best Buy have in the weekly ads for next week a listing for Fantasia.

Probably because it comes out the week after next week. Has anyone posted the November 28 ads?

I preordered Fantasia through Amazon. Hopefully I will get it the day before release day like with Avatar: Extended.

From the new Fantasia commentary:

And it's better that we acknowledge the history, but do so perhaps without perpetuating the image, which can anyway be found in scholarly animation books and collections.

Re: Disney Classic Animation BD Plans: 2009-2010 - Pinocchio, Snow White, Fantasia, B

Pre-ordered my BD set online with a Disney Store gift card. Received shipping confirmation yesterday. Really excited about this one (although the DVD box set bonus features should have been included on the discs. But I'm resigned to Disney's apparent pattern of deleting at least some DVD extras when they release a title on BD. As an extras fan, I haven't been able to part with a Disney DVD yet, due to some bonuses not being carried over to its BD counterpart).
