Universal Halloween Starter Pack: The Thing, Dawn/Land of the Dead ---> 9/30

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...Halloween/1917

Probably all the existing extras, plus U-Control, DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio, and BD-Live on The Thing.

Sweet (mainly for The Thing -- bring on They Live!).

JMcCraw 07-17-08 03:52 PM

"The Thing" is why I even own an HD-DVD player.

Excellent news!

Giles 07-22-08 09:09 AM

the starter pack over at Amazon, averages each disc to 18 bucks.

Paul Arnette 07-22-08 09:32 AM

What's the justification for these discs retailing for $26.99 each at Amazon vs. $19.95 each for End of Days, Miami Vice, and U-571?

Adam Tyner 07-22-08 09:42 AM

Amazon just hasn't given them their usual 30% discount yet. Dunno why. If the info on Amazon is correct, Universal isn't pricing them any differently.

Mr. Cinema 07-22-08 09:55 AM

Universal has retail listings of $34.99 for the horror movies. I think the action movies are set at $29.99.

Paul Arnette 07-22-08 10:33 AM

Family Video has the set for $37.35 shipped. The usual 'charging your credit card now for future pre-order' bummer applies. Still at $12.45 a disc consider me sold.

I saw that too, ordered as well.

Honestly? Are you really putting those three movies in the same league as the (debatably) classics in the Halloween Pack? I didn't like a single one of them and find they're completely inferior to the others. That said, I concur that it is probably a pricing error.

How you get that to work out?
It added $1.99 for shipping, plus nearly two bucks in sales tax to my order.

Does anybody know which version of DAWN OF THE DEAD this is?

The HighDefDigest link shows it as Unrated, but Family Video says "Rated R".

I really prefer the Unrated Director's Cut to the theatrical version.

There's only one version, it is the Unrated Cut.

I might have to take advantage of that Family Video deal as well. The Thing is the only one of those 3 that I own in HD.

Zen Peckinpah 07-22-08 11:53 AM

Might get The Thing if the DTS-HD track gets better marks than the already substantial DD+ on the HD DVD. Already have Dawn of the Dead on HD with a TrueHD track and Land of the Dead bears no interest.

they put tax on your order? oh! that sucks.

Copper Blue 07-22-08 01:43 PM

family video shows the List Price for the action pack and halloween packs as both $59.90 (as does Amazon). That is why they are charging the same for both packs. It also lists all the individual films at 29.90 (as does amazon), which runs counter to the press release of $34.95. Curiously, Amazon is only discounting the halloween movies & packs 10%.

Supermallet 07-22-08 05:54 PM

I'll get The Thing when it's on sale.

Mr. Cinema 07-26-08 06:48 PM

The Thing looks great in a blu case:

DeanoBKN 07-26-08 07:13 PM

I already have The Thing on HD, so i'll probably pass, but who knows...

Morphine1680 07-26-08 09:35 PM

Amazon lowered their price to $41

I was just about to post the same thing.

Unfortunately the bus wreck scene is still censored on the Unrated HD DVD just like the Unrated R1 DVD is, unlike the European and Japanese DVD's. I would guess the BD will be too, it's quite a minor edit though.

mdc3000 07-29-08 05:42 PM

for $40, I'll bite. I already have the thing but never got around to getting Dawn and Land on HD and I really like both of those flicks...

Gizmo 09-18-08 11:51 AM

Got all three of these yesterday...tons of things are cut.

From TDB:

By the way, in the event we can't get reviews done by street date, it appears that Universal has skimped again on the extras on their Blu-ray titles. John Carpenter's The Thing and Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead seem to have only the audio commentary and Picture-in-Picture options (the previous HD-DVD and DVD releases had a lot more extras). George Romero's Land of the Dead does seem to have some extras, but not all of what was on the previous DVD and HD-DVD has been included (the documentary and a couple other things seem to be missing). Just know that so you don't sell your existing discs in case you wanted to upgrade to Blu-ray, but you also wanted to keep ALL the extras.
