Like I said, I was shocked. And disappointed, because I'm basically done with DVD. I wanted to buy some cheap previewed blu-rays.
Nothing I said was meant to imply that you are anti-Blu-ray, and I apologize if it seemed that way. I only meant that it seems that you are overreacting to an isolated case (isolated to a group of stores that are owned by a single franchise operator), rather than looking at the bigger picture.

So, the owner of this Blockbuster franchise decided, for whatever reason, to temporarily suspend Blu-ray rentals. Yet at the same time Walmart, Best Buy, and even many other Blockbuster locations are all expanding their coverage and selection of Blu-ray products.

Put in perspective, this news is nothing more than a small blip on the radar.

My local Naperville Blockbuster recently started carrying blu-ray, much more convenient than the previous nearest location in Wheaton. The other location was one of the first test stores though and had over 200 titles to choose from. The closer store is picking up almost all of the new titles, including catalog titles like Sand Pebbles, Patton, and recent non-day-and-date titles like There Will Be Blood and Cloverfield.

The whims of a broken down old rental chain at a few of their locations determine what happens to an entire format?

I don't think so.

Pssh, that broken down retailer may be buying Circuit City!

Ugh, I only managed a BB for 6 months and it was hell. I still remember explaining to every other customer why we no longer rent VHS tapes in 2004 and why DVDs have blackbars. I avoid actual rental places as much as possible unless I'm bored out of my mind and need a new movie fix. Too bad my local BB still does carry a single Blu-ray movie.

I am on the other side of town - Buffalo Grove/Vernon Hills and here the Blockbusters have been expanding their BR selections.

Do you mind telling me which store? I hardly ever rent at Blockbuster, but it would be nice to know.

A friend of mine has been renting from a Plainfield store for a while and they typically have the new releases each week.

Well, first of all, that ain't saying much, considering Circuit City's current financial state. Heck, if the members of DVD Talk all got together and formed an LLC, WE could probably buy Circuit City . And second, most recent projections indicate that Blockbuster won't end up going through with it anyway. Most of the market and analyst reactions have been very negative about the proposed deal.

Hey, they made an offer to Circuit City...that's enough right there! I can't imagine BB actually going through with it either...its like two rocks joining together to see which one floats. BB is experimenting with their wanna be Best Buy stores and so far they are not doing to well.

Oh, I know what you're saying. My only point was that BB doesn't exactly need to be swimming in cash reserves to be able to make an offer on Circuit City. If I remember right, their offer was only around a $6 share price. Much more than that, and I doubt they could have afforded it. Your two rocks analogy is spot on.

Beginning of this year, my local Blockbuster closed down and moved out. They used to take up a huge space in a very popular shopping strip (convenient for everybody in the neighborhood), but they moved to the outskirts of the neighborhood and is about a third in size (inconvenient for most people in the neighborhood). When this month is over, I'm canceling my Blockbuster online.

I guess I'll go back to buying movies instead of renting. I haven't bought a movie since Ratatouille and Michael Clayton.

BB will be closing down a 1/6th of their stores in the next 6 months (or so says a few Managers I still speak to at BB). In my town we have 1 BB, but in the town over was three, and now its down to two with one of those on their way out. Not sure if this affect Blu much unless they transfer those over instead of selling them as used. I can't imagine some BB's needing six copies of Fantastic Four.

I wouldn't exactly call Blockbuster a broken down rental chain anymore. CEO Jim Keyes seems to have a firm grasp on the company, and it's showing considering we posted a profit in the 4th quarter 07 and 1st quarter 08.

I manage a corporate BlockBuster, and we have a decent Blu-Ray section (about 100 titles). Sadly, I don't think I have turned a profit on one of them yet. They do rent from time to time, but it's only new releases within the 1st month, and most of my repeat Blu-Ray customers simply exchange their online mailers for them, so I don't make a dime off the transaction.

Awareness has gone up though in the 3 months since we started carrying them. So I guess it's only a matter of time right? I mean, DVD started out small too...

You must be the only manager of BB that likes the new CEO. Many dislike the changes he has made, and personally, as soon as my $3.99 2 a month plan runs out, I'm going back to Netflix. Getting rid of Unlimited in store rentals with BBO return and raising the price? No thank you (Though I do understand that you as a store don't make much off of people with BBO envelopes anyway)

I view that site every day...nice to read other employees venting once in a while

I don't mind the changes he's made. Yes sometimes it feels a bit too much like 7-11 with all the new merchandise we are selling, but the keyword here is that it is indeed selling. I'm also happy that we are now selling video games as well.

Yes, I'm sure those $30 framed posters are just flying out the door

You said machines...are you actually one of the test stores for selling HDTVs, Sound systems, Slurpees?

I would hope that you would receive some sort of rebate back from Blockbuster corporate for each envelope used as a coupon. I mean they do charge more for the ability to exchange, I imagine you would get every penny of that difference.

IIRC, they get $1.25 for each one exchanged in-store.

Maybe it's different around here, but the same Blockbuster I mentioned is generally packed on Friday or Saturday nights from people still renting. Anecdotal of course, and I'm sure it's nowhere near as busy as the VHS days, but it still seems to get some decent business.

I don't believe it is anecdotal...

Study: Blu-ray Sales to Pass DVD By 2012

The entertainment merchants group also says Blockbuster is still dominating video rentals.

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (June 24, 2008) -- A new study forecasts that Blu-ray high-def disc sales will surpass standard-def DVDs by the year 2012.

The Entertainment Merchants Association, a non-profit trade group, predicts that Blu-ray disc sales will reach $9.5 billion in 2012, up from $260 million in 2007.

The group adds that all home video spending will increase to $25.6 billion in that year, compared to $24 billion in 2007. The rise will be boosted by the growth of Blu-ray and the video game industry.

"Consumers remain enamored with DVD and video games even as they incorporate new forms of entertainment media into their consumption patterns," said Bo Andersen, President and CEO of EMA. "New generations of hardware and software, and alternative delivery channels, will ensure that home video and video games remain phenomenally popular entertainment options for the American public for years to come."

In other findings, EMA says Blockbuster accounted for 73 percent of the video rental business in 2007 with NetFlix and Blockbuster's online businesses capturing 25 percent. The remaining two percent came from kiosk rentals.

yea right.

back to BR
my store just got a stack of 30 addtional blu-ray for rent older catalogtitles.

In 2006, they closed around 300 stores. In 2007, it was another 300.
