Are you buying movies on BD that you already owned on SD?
 

I'm sure many of you are in the same boat as myself. I can't decide if I should buy movies on Blu-Ray that I already own on standard DVD. If I had all the money in the world, of course I wouldn't hesitate. But as it stands, I'm conflicted. I have no problem buying a BD if it's a movie I don't own. But to pay $30 for a movie I already have, despite the superior quality, is hard to justify on my budget.

So I was wondering how many of you are rebuying movies. And for those who are, how many have you re-bought?

Unless the new transfer is a bust, I'll upgrade all of my SD titles as they're re-released. No sense watching an inferior version.

Most of my 120 Blu-rays are titles I used to own on SD. I sold the SD versions and upgraded.

I have been. Probably 1/3 of the Blu-Rays I've bought have been double dips.

I do it too, just as I was willing to upgrade non-anamorphic to anamorphic, or old transfer to new transfer.

However, it's been a while since I bought a title for $30. I think the last one was a day and date title in a store last year (the majority I purchase online). For many titles I wait until they're $20 or less.

I'll only upgrade on movies that have elaborate special effects and active surround channels. These double dips have to be under $19.99.

Yes. 176 out of my 292 BD collection are upgrades.

Yes. If the SD has features not ported I'll have both. If not I will sell the SD.

Definitely. I've upgraded every title so far. Not counting overseas titles like Air Force One. I ain't paying 40 bucks for that. I'll just wait for Sony to release it over here.

I have been doing it, but I've tried to be a bit picky when doing so, a movie that I really, really like or a really good deal.

The REAL problem now is trying to decide whether to rebuy titles that I have on SD and replaced with HD-DVD. How many of you are trying to replace HD-DVDs with BDs now that the format war has been decided?

I am guilty of this as well. But mainly I'll do it only if it's a film I love or if the BD transfer is absoultely reference quality. I did this with the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and The Fifth Element (Remastered), for example. And I'm planning on picking up the Infernal Affairs Hong Kong BD trilogy set even though I really haven't watched the R1 trilogy DVD set I picked up a year or two ago.

I've got about 2,000 or so DVDs so upgrading them all is out of the question. For select titles I've done it by my general policy is that if I already own the DVD I don't buy the blu-ray.

Some exceptions have been: 5th Element, Unforgiven, Kubrick titles, Bladerunner, Dracula, Stargate, and Enter the Dragon. Most of those were because I was able to get really good prices for the blu-rays. I also ordered Batman Begins.

All of my 25 Blu-Ray disks I also own on SD. I won't upgrade my entire collection just yet (700 disks), but if the Blu-Ray has a great transfer and is one of my favorite movies, then yes I'll upgrade.

I do as long as I can replace it for $10 - $15... not too hard with buy.com and google checkout. About to add Dirty Dancing, Young Guns, 2001, and Black hawk Down to that list. I was able to replace about 30 of my titles with the HD-DVD upgrade for $2.30 after Google Checkout not bad considering I've been selling the old DVDs for $3-$4.

Especially good deal if they have the mail in rebate... The Rock, Unbreakable, etc

I also stopped buying DVDs ~2 years ago, so I'm most likely going to be buying new-to-me titles. For titles on HD DVD and BD, I still pick up the HD DVD version since it's likely to be half the price of the BD.

I've been trading in all of my SD copies and buying BD replacements during the various sales that have been going on. $400+ in trade-in credit waiting for the big DVDPlanet sale.

Not counting those I got for free with player purchases, I've only upgraded a few select favorites.

The Matrix Trilogy (only because I got in on the $20 pricing error at Circuit City :D)
Harry Potter movies
Serenity (replaced a lost DVD that was later found)
V for Vendetta

I'm expecting the first 3 Die Hard movies today or tomorrow.

That's it out of 79 HD DVD & Blu-ray movies. There's more I'll upgrade to when they become available, but it's a very short list. I'd rather spend my money on something I don't already own than rebuy the same thing twice (the same policy I had on DVD double-dips).

I've got 16 BDs so far, and I've managed not to upgrade any DVDs to BD, but that'll definitely change soon.

A good portion of my 593 DVD collection is TV on DVD titles, so I haven't really gone deep into films quite yet. I'm sure I'll be upgrading some of those TV sets also, but the TV on BD market is so small, that won't be for awhile yet. I do own my fair share of films, however, and like I said, a good portion of them will probably be upgraded to Blu-ray.

Even some of the newer releases I bought earlier this year are just screaming at me for a BD upgrade. Films like 3:10 To Yuma and one of my favorite films from last year, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, is just waiting for that BD upgrade.

I have about 500 DVDs and, so far, about 35 BDs. Four of my BDs are double-dips: 2001, Blade Runner and I bought the Spider-Man BD set (I had Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 already on DVD). Given the expense of BDs right now, I don't plan on upgrading any of my DVDs short term unless 1) it's a movie I treasure; and/or 2) I can get a great price.

I only have 16 blu-rays and I believe only 3 are double-dips(Evil Dead 2, Halloween, and just picked up Narnia, and I re-purchased Die Hard on Blu-Ray but I lost my previous set in my last move so i don't count that as a dd.) I think i will try to get the superior versions down the road but now there are too many dvds I would like to own to spend too much on double dips. There are only two of my SD dvds that come to mind that i plan on picking up if and when they reach Blu, and thats Fargo and Re-Animator(and since I own three dvds and one LD of that flick i might as well keep the trend going).
