Re: KINO goes Blu

I'll pre-order all of the Bavas - the Redemption discs are usually much more reasonably priced than the regular Kinos. Looks like the fall horror lineup is shaping up nicely!

Re: KINO goes Blu

I'm definitely in for Black Sunday.

With that said, would it be too much to see Stalker get upgraded to Blu-Ray?

From blu-ray.com:

Next month, Kino Video's Redemption label will bring both Burke & Hare and The Blood Beast Terror to Blu-ray.

Burke & Hare:

This 1972 cult horror favorite stars Derren Nesbitt (Where Eagles Dare) and Glynn Edwards (The Blood Beast Terror) as the title characters, two grave robbers going about their twisted business in 1820s Scotland.

From Redemption's official synopsis:

"Two of the most notorious figures in the history of medicine, William Burke (Nesbitt) and William Hare (Edwards) were a pair of enterprising street thugs who provided anatomical specimens to the Edinburgh Medical College - often by robbing the graves of the recently dead, sometimes through even more nefarious methods."

The Blood Beast Terror:

In 1968, director Vernon Sewell brought audiences this gothic horror chiller, which stars Peter Cushing (Horror Express) as a detective searching for the perpetrator behind a rash of mutilated dead bodies left in the English countryside.

From Redemption's official synopsis:

"Detective Inspector Quennell (Cushing) [is] brought in to investigate the deaths. He consults entomology professor Mallinger (Robert Flemyng, Funny Face), but the doctor seems to be hiding a dark secret about his fetching young daughter, Clare (Wanda Ventham, The Prisoner). The deeper Quennell digs into their story, the bloodier the violence, until he discovers a terrifying truth about Mallinger's experiments."

Redemption's Blu-rays presents each film in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1 with monaural LPCM audio tracks. Bonus supplements include:

Burke & Hare:

Blood Beast Terror is supposed to be pretty dire, but it gets cheap enough I might indulge.

It showed up in my GB today, and I was able to persuade Amazon to charge me the earlier $12.99 pre-order price, so my total was $12.34. Awesome customer service once again, and the CS guy actually wrote the following in his reply:

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused. I don't want to trouble you anymore.
And I hadn't even been grumpy in my original request - how could I be? Truly the best company in the world, except, assumedly, for those in CA.

Re: KINO goes Blu

One of Mario Bava's finest and most gothic films, The Whip and the Body aka La frusta e il corpo, has just been signed to Redemption and will now be remastered from the original negative and released on Blu-ray. Starring horror legend Christopher Lee as a sadistic nobleman whose main pleasure in life is to whip his sister-in-law, played by the beautiful Daliah Lavi. When the nobleman is murdered his ghost returns and the beatings continue.

Do we know the length of Fear and Desire? I've only seen a 61-minute version, but the full cut is 72 minutes.

Re: KINO goes Blu

+1 for Blue Angel

Kina of crappy of them to make Keaton's College exclusive to the set. Where's the reward for those of us who have purchased every single Kino Keaton title on Blu-ray? Oh well...it does say only until 2013. I hope it's not long into 2013.

Re: KINO goes Blu

Does Kino still own the US home video rights to Dersu Uzala? I would love to see a proper 65mm to hidef transfer of this.

oh and here are DVDBeaver's review of the Bava films:

Lisa and the Devil
Hatchet for the Honeymoon
Black Sunday

Black Sunday looks great!

Has anyone picked up the BR of Die Nibelungen? Is zoom defeated? This is very important to me as I have a FS TV.

Interesting. Raro seems to have a pretty decent catalog, but they've been really spotty about actually releasing those titles. Hopefully this means an increase in the number of their films actually being released.
