re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays

As I said elsewhere...I would like to see Criterion move to 3 standard Blu-ray releases per month in 2009. This is a good start.

I'm so glad I bought a region A PS3 now - all that needs to happen is the dollar to crash against the pound so these releases are a bit cheaper!

I got an email from Amazon, they said that 400 Blows was moved up to February 12.

I also noticed they raised the SRP to $39.95. Criterion still lists it as $29.95.

This, I'm going to get! Been holding off buying the DVD for the eventual BD release

But yeah. I have to chime in about the packaging though. After getting Chungking Express and The Man Who Fell to Earth yesterday, I was a somewhat disappointed with the packaging (I have already heard about how bad the packaging is, but never really saw it before my eyes).

Hope they change this in the future.

I received El Norte from Amazon today.

Also, The Wages of Fear and In the Realm of the Senses are now available for pre-order on Amazon.

re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays

I propose that the mods change this thread to Criterion Blu-rays, since we are discussing and talking about releases past November.

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays

So is the 400 Blows supposed to be $29.99 or $39.99? Criterion say the former, every other DVD retailer says the latter...

Awesome. This one might end up my first Blu-ray Criterion. Slow-burning suspense at its best.

Now where is Sorcerer?

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays

I finally had the chance to watch the blu ray of The Third Man over the weekend, and that is one nice blu ray! Not only is the movie great (and the print looks great on blu), but the extras are fantastic.

Now if they'd only get to releasing Seven Samurai on blu ray I'd be REALLY happy.

This was mentioned in Criterion's original Blu-ray announcement, so it'll most likely be coming sometime this year.

My most desired Kurosawa films on BD would be these (this order):
1. Seven Samurai
2. Red Beard
3. Ran
4. Yojimbo + Sanjuro

as for older criterion titles, we need bd's of insomnia, robinson crusoe on mars, for all mankind, and the killer or hard boiled.
As much as I would love to see Criterion put out the Killer or Hard Boiled on BD, they'd have to do some serious work to reacquire the rights first.

Ran on BD would be an instant buy for me. That would look fantastic!

They just moved it back to the original March 24th date.

Seriously. All of those medium and long shots are just crying out for a hi-def presentation, not to mention the striking use of color.
