I've never gotten around to seeing The Last Metro. What would you compare it to? Would it be a good blind buy?

A definite rental, even for a middling Truffaut fan. Certainly not one of his masterpieces.

Love that new Seventh Seal cover. Definite buy from me.

I hope Criterion puts out a few Melville titles on BD. I'd love Le Samourai or Le Cercle Rouge.

I could probably survive with only the Bunuel titles, personally.

Anybody know if the picture in HDD's Marienbad news story is the actual cover for the BD? Looks pretty generic.

^ personally I like it, since the film is so utterly visual, for the DVD/bluray to look like that seems restrained and purposeful

Yes, it is appropriate. If ever there was a film that should be allowed to speak for itself...

It's somewhat similar Rappeneau's Bon Voyage or Tavernier's Safe Conduct.

Thanks Gerry.

I think I'm going to pick it up. I'll give it a spin after 400 Blows, which I'm incredibly excited for.

According to this Reuters report, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is being released by Criterion in May on DVD and Blu-Ray.

"Benjamin Button" DVD will be in stores May 5 (Reuters)
: Reuters Wed Mar 18, 2009, 11:15 pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - " The Curious Case of Benjamin Button " will keep retailers curious no longer: "Button" DVDs will hit stores May 5.

The "Button" plans were sewed up during the weekend, and Paramount will announce the home-entertainment release date Thursday. The Brad Pitt / Cate Blanchett -starring film won three Academy Awards and is among the last of the high-profile Oscar pictures to set a debut on home video.

Fox Home Entertainment will release Oscar best picture winner "Slumdog Millionaire" on March 31.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment 's "Milk," for which Sean Penn copped a best actor statuette, hit retail shelves March 10. USHE has set an April 21 street date for its political drama "Frost/Nixon," which, like "Button" and "Milk," was a nominee for best picture.

The fifth nominee -- the Weinstein Co.'s Nazi-themed drama " The Reader ," for which Kate Winslet was voted best actress -- will be released by Genius Products on DVD. No date has been set.

Paramount Home Entertainment also set a June 2 release date for DVDs of two other Oscar-nominated pics: " Revolutionary Road ," starring Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio , and the Daniel Craig -toplined "Defiance."

In addition to its single-disc packaging, "Button" will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in two-disc Criterion Edition sets featuring more than three hours of special features. A documentary on the second disc follows the creative development of the literary adaptation and its many production challenges, including the elaborate, Oscar-winning visual effects.

Single-disc "Button" DVDs will sell for $29.99 in the U.S. and $36.99 in Canada. Two-disc DVD and Blu-ray sets will be priced at $39.99 in the U.S. and $45.99 in Canada.

Weird. If true, I find that pretty surprising.

If I read that correctly, the Criterion will be the only Blu-ray edition available. That could be big for Criterion.

I will definitely purchase the Criterion Blu-ray of BB, as I really liked the film. I've been very pleased with their decisions lately.

And, I think, at the worst, the 2-Disc BD is going to be around $29 on Amazon and $32 on Criterion's website. That's what it has been with most $39.99 releases.

Thanks for the info, dx.

It's because of David Fincher, most likely. Criterion and Fincher have had a solid working relation ship since the LD days. He must have finally convinced Paramount to work with Criterion.

I think the main reason all of his films have not been under the Criterion label is due to studios relations ships with Criterion. Sony's (Panic Room) relationship went south with Criterion years ago, and Fox (Alien 3 & Fight Club) has never been a big supporter of third party releases.

New Line's SE of Seven was a re-purpose of the Criterion SE, and to this day we haven't gotten the SE of The Game on DVD, which is probably due to some type of haggling between Criterion and Universal, I think that who distributes it now... Hopefully, that will get resolved one day.

The above is the DVD cover...I'm pretty sure the Blu-ray is going to have the current Criterion Blu-ray packaging, meaning no hard case.
